HOOKED!
« on: November 15, 2013, 12:41:00 PM »
Got my first deer (ever) last weekend, and with a recurve bow!  8 yards away: now that was a rush I doubt I'm going to get tired of.  I'm not proud of my shot (pass-through on the jugular) but it certainly could have been worse and I was able to find him and quickly end it.  I'll need to practice holding draw for 4-5 minutes during my sessions now, as that's what cost me on this hunt.  I hope the rest of you are enjoying your seasons and wish you luck!

Damon, I'm sure if you can possibly hold your draw for that long that would be good but I think I speak for most everyone when I say that none of us can do that. I would also say if you could possibly do that I would choose to step up in weight over being able to hold it that long.

The trick is to learn the proper time to make your draw with a trad bow.

And congrats on your deer. Good stuff Brother.

You have a good point.  I definitely pulled a good bit early, suppose those compound habits die hard.  What is a more realistic time of holding full draw?  a minute or so?  In what little practice of holding draw I've done that's about as far as I got with my 45# bow.  And holds were significantly shorter after that single one.

I typically hold for just a split second. maybe two but literally that's it.  unless hes walking though the trees than I can hold it a bit, but even 10 seconds is a long time man.

any chance we get a pic of your deer?
is it September yet??

Really glad that you are hooked and 8 yards off the ground!  You must have had a really great hunt that evening.

out standing on your first deer.  It is memorable.  Mine was 22 years ago and I can still close my eyes and see that yellow feathered arrow flying true to that doe.  I can see her run and even hear an odd crashing sound I had never heard   with a gun kill. Finding my broken cedar arrow... well you get the picture.

Thanks everyone!  Ashton, you nailed it:  I'll never forget it.  I was finishin' up my last project on the ranch that day, saw some does and jumped out of the truck with my bow to stalk a half mile ahead of 'em and hopefully set up an ambush.  Lost sight of them, but here comes a 2 yr. spike I'd been seeing.  Walks right up, looks square at me and apparently didn't see my tan shirt and jeans.  I let loose and man...yeah, unforgettable.

I'd love to show pics, but here in grizzly country and with no one else working that day, I jumped onto field dressing him immediately.  I will be making some "trophies" from his hide though.

Congratulations, man. I can just picture you running ahead to make the ambush.
When I learned to shoot from Rick Welch he would stand behind me at the 3D range and repeat..."DRAW...get steady...1001, 1002, release".
At least you've got one killed...not me yet. Lots with the compound though, but the trad first will be great.

Congrats WY and welcome to the Gang!  I believe most of us hunting with stickbows don't draw until we see the shot.  If I try to hold more than about 10 seconds, my accuracy goes to crap pretty fast.  A good shot requires concentration on the spot to hit.
