This has been my first year hunting with a recurve, I've had several deer in range with nothing offering me a good shot but that all changed Saturday night while hunting a traditional only controlled hunt here in Oklahoma.
Other than seeing a couple bucks cruising for a hot doe early Saturday morning it had been a slow day and with the temps. being in the upper 60's and the wind blowing like you wouldn't believe I didn't expect the action to pick up much.
As the sun began to set I saw a doe come out of a thicket about 60 yards west of me,she made her way towards me and began feeding 5 yards from my stand not acting like anything was following her I decided to take the shot, my arrow hit her in the spine so I nocked another one and the second arrow ended things quickly. I looked at the time and it was 4:40 I decided to wait till 5:30 to get down and field dress her.
With only one arrow left in my quiver I no sooner got it nocked and looked up to see a good buck coming down the exact same path with his nose to the ground so I tried to calm my nerves and get ready which was not easy as I had just shot my first deer ever with a recurve, the buck came in facing me to about 10 yards then looked up and saw the doe laying there on the right side of my stand I fully expected him to spook but he turned and came to 5 yards under the left side of my stand.
Still scared he would spook I came to full draw and shot. The arrow hit him going down next to his spine and down in behind his shoulder. He jumped and kicked, ran 60 yards and died.
When he went down I looked at the time it was 4:45 so in a matter of 5 minutes I had killed my first doe and not only my first buck with a recurve, but the biggest buck I have ever taken with any weapon!
