How's this?
« on: November 21, 2013, 05:31:00 PM »
Scheming up some arrows for my 58# Kanati that's on the way. Looking @ Easton FMJ's.

I was wondering which spine I would need? I would like as much FOC as is reasonably possible, while staying with 200 grain broadheads.

I am thinking 340's cut to 29", with 75 grain brass insert and 200 grain VPA 3 blade for everything except for elk and moose, which I would use my Grizzly single bevel.

I think the 340's would be close to 610-615 w/nocks and feathers.

The 400's would come out right at 580 grain ish arrows, hitting the 10 gpp mark.

Can't wait for the bow to get here so I can start putting them together and getting ready for my first hunt (spring bear) as a Montana resident!

I'm just not sure which one would work, and don't want to have to buy a doz of each to figure out which one would fly best   :knothead:

Check out that new archery range in Bozeman. They might have something there you can test shoot. Maybe even let you purchase a couple different shaft sizes for testing. Walt can tell you where it is.

What is your draw length? If it's long, I bet you could use the 340s no problem.

Long draw, go for the 340. Short draw go for the 400. You can always build the side plate out if they are on the weak side.

We sell them too by the way.

So I put in all the info on 3rivers dynamic spine calculator, I didn't know the VPA only comes in 1 1/2 in the Big Jim style 300 grain head, will have to go with the custom shop 1 1/4 200 grain heads.
looks like a 400 spine FMJ w/ 200 grain tips, and 50 grain inserts would be best. Comes right in @ 596 grains.

I'm not finding anysetup according to the spine calculator on 3rivers that allows me to use a 300 gr broadhead without being up over 700 grains of arrow weight

no, 28" is not long, but average. Careful with the using calculators as a rule. Not every bow is the same even though it might be the same weight length and even model (from same mfg). Not to mention that calculators are just a starting point.

FMJ's are great arrows and I sell a bunch of them, but I believe they are better suited for wheel bows or guys with lots of disposable income. As tough as they are, they can easily be bent.

I shot them one year and thought they were great, but Easton gave them to me and having my choice, I               opted for their Axis wood grain the following year, which is an all carbon arrow. Their new centershot is a great one too.

Thanks, bigjim

Kanatis do like heavy arrows. I shoot a 525 grain arrow with my 46# Kanati, in fact it's the same setup I use with my 50# Orion recurve. They aren't cut past center, so a little weaker spine works for me. I'm shooting 500s with a 100 grain insert and 175 grains of broadhead up front and cut to 28.5" BOP. I do build out the sideplate of the Orion a bit to make the same arrow tune with both. I paper tune them and both leave a nice bullet hole with three little cuts around it. I draw about 27.75" to 28", but I want the back of my broadhead to touch my finger, so I like the arrows cut 28.5". My fingers aren't very big.

Man, that 58# Kanati should just smoke an arrow! My old body won't tolerate that kind of draw weight anymore, but whitetails are the biggest critters I hunt anyhow, so my 47# works just fine.

I agree with the guys who recommend a test kit. Those calculators will get you close, but it sounds like you are right on the border. Close enough that you're going to want to do some real world testing.

Let us know how it goes...oh, and pictures of the Kanati when you get it are mandatory!

Might end up being 59#, so that should definitely work! I would really like to use Big Jims 300 grain VPA head, trying to put together an arrow setup that would allow me to use it.
I think either the Easton FMJ or Axis traditional should allow me to get there
