T.A.C.,Originally, or at least for many years, "D" refered to the bows cross sectional shape like an elb (flat back with a round belly). Calling a bow a "D" bow because of the strung profile is a more recent use of the term. Also, Some folks don't consider a longbow to be a longbow unless it has the "D" cross section, and all others are American flatbows. So I guess it really depends on who you're talking too.lol

Actually,I believe the opposit is true,to what BambooBender said.
A D cross section bow,can be changed to have a different profile. Therefore, its not a Dbow anymore. But,a true D profile bow,can have any shape limb cross section, and still be a Dbow.

i own a dwyer original long bow and really enjoy it...very classic "D" profile. i ahve also shot a 7-Lakes longbow and found it to be very good, also. the dwyer is a narrow limb/deep core longbow.

I had a 7 lakes that I sold that's it in my Avatar. That is why I'm going through withdrawl now. If I can buy it back I will . If not 7 lakes doesn't produce finished bows and that's the only reason I'm looking around. I miss my 7 lakes
I really like the Northen Mist and the Dwyer so far.

I'm a little partial to my Dwyer Originals. Although I've considered Mahaska, Saxon amd Northern Mist. All have "classic" looks, made from reputable bowyers and would most likely be a matter of personal preference. I believe Dwyer will let you test his bows before you buy. Perhaps the others have the same policy.

I'm shooting an Abbot longbow I got off the classifieds. it has a bacote handle with osage limbs. 66" long and 59@28. proly the best D shaped I've ever shot. I had a Dwyer Classic that was 68" and 62" long that was a sweety. Cut my traditional teeth on whitetails with that one. That was one fine bow. I am about to contact Steve Abbot on building one of his bows for me although I really dont need another one. this one shoots too good to let go. This will give you an idea of the profile of the bow.

Take a look at
Kim Sha Mattawoman II.
IMHO, the Mattawoman II is one of the best "D" bows around.

As you've seen, plenty of great choices in D bows. The only one I have extensive experience with is the Dwyer original, and I can sure vouch that it is an excellent bow. There was one for sale on the classifieds the last time I looked.
