Let's go hunt for Rosie's
« on: December 08, 2013, 08:04:00 PM »
This year I had a late season cow tag for western oregon near my home. This was the only day I could get out for the season so I took lots for pics.  No elk were killed but I got very close and passed on a calf. There was about a 1/2" of snow which was cool and not the norm for hunting seasons around here. Enjoy!!

Took a lunch break for some tea and smoked salmon. Good time to test gear. Used a DIY alcohol stove I made and it worked ok. Wouldn't want to use it for a week in this weather   :)

View from my lunch stop. Fog was rolling in pretty good.

Here is some steep terrain. Lots of areas like this. The steepness isn't has bad as all the brush on it.

I had been fighting a cold and some of the hills were taking it to me so I decided to head back to the truck and hunt a different areas. Driving down the forest service I went through the top of the only clearcut that is on the main rd. I was feeling pretty puny at this point but thought what the heck might as well stop and glass it.

Looky what I found!

They were about 300 yds down the clearcut. It was a steep one soming off the rd. After stalking the wrong finger ridge I finanlly got the wrong one. Here is a view peeking from behind a log from the ridge above them.

I meant right one. When I sneeked around they weren't in their beds. I looked in the ravine to my left and there they were.

I got lucky that they didn't see me. I butt scooted closer to them being in plain view the whole time. I got to about 30yds of a bigger calf. But didn't feel comfortable with the shot.

I passed on a smaller calf that had just finsihed trying to nurse a cow. The bigger calf I wanted never stepped into the lane I had. I got pretty excited when the lead cow started working towards me when the wind switched. Game over!

I had spent about 30-40min within bow range of the herd and had a great time. I always enjoyed seeing everbody's hunts and so I though I would return the favor. Hope you enjoyed it. O yeah. I was hunting with a 3 pc Pronghorn longbow 52lb@27in with Surewood shafts and Stos 160gr broadheads. Thanks for coming along.

Awesome... I have to get my "good" camera up and running again so that I can return the favor by sharing a few of my hunts.  These are always my favorite threads - especially the ones out west like this!

Thanks for sharing.
