Cabelas Cold Weather and Polar:
« on: December 13, 2013, 05:21:00 PM »
It’s really getting cold here and we need to have some good clothing to make outings more comfortable. I’ve got a friend who recently purchased some Cabelas Cold Weather and Polar undergarments. He’s complaining about it not wicking moisture like his older Daymart and Patagonia stuff.  He says even a slight walk and he’s getting ringing wet. Any of you guys have any experience or thoughts?  What are you using?

I use the Merino wool as a base layer and it seems to work great for me !

My preference is silk with merino wool over it. Wicks well and is quite warm. Then additional outer layers as needed.

IMO poly pro is over rated as a wicking layer

Check sierratradingpost.com for GREAT buys on cold weather gear. Cabelas is over-rated and high priced.

On the positive side, I own a set and use them constantly. Really like them, think for the weight you can not beat them, great air barrier for layering.  Cabelas had them on sale for half off last week, just have to watch the web site for a deal.  Would buy again and will be buying my son a set.  I do not wear them next to skin, put on a under armour compression shirt first, don't know if that makes a difference in the sweating.

I have a set of cabelas polar weight. It's comfy and soft and warm. However. Yes if you sweat it right on your skin. If you're sitting still it might be ok. But don't do anything active in it. It really holds moisture. I myself anymore do silk base under wool anymore if I'm moving.

Jim,
I believe we worked at ATAR in raffle booth a few years ago. I hope you have been well.

As far as your friends gear not wicking: Has it been washed with any type of fabric softener? Fabric softeners will kill the wicking ability of several fabrics.
