wool weight question....former thread, adding winstopper to wool

Just ordered a zip up hooded wool in esb from the asbells. Terresa only had esb or esg in extra heavy (25-28oz).
How thick is it?
Warmth?
Wind coming through?
Is it ? (want this with me in the fall for a week long canoe/camp trip in the boundary waters of minnesota)

Get a wind stopper vest from Asbell. Simple, light, and works very well.

I wear a windbreaker, light weight jacket under mine when it is windy just like the golfers wear. It is warm and cuts the wind, but I still get the warmth and the quiet of the wool.

Unless Grandma wants to take apart that whole coat just go with a windbreaker under it. You can also find windshirts that may fit better under the wool coat.
If you decide to go with resewing the coat you can find some lightweight windproof nylon or nylon taffeta that will work for a lining. But...
You'd better offer to take the coat apart for Grandma, that's the really hard part. Sewing it back together is far easier.

on a side note question.....woolrich shirt/jacs, what weight wool are they normally?
comparing other jackets the last few hours and I see alot are around the 20oz vacinity.

Question. With the windstopper inside the wool, isn't the insulating effect lost? I understand the wind doesn't hit you directly, but the layer of warmed(by body heat) air is constantly being blown away. Seems the windproof layer should be on the outside. I know the problems with noise et., but this time of year, staying warm is the priority. Am I missing something? Tks.

Woolrich comes in a variety of weights. I've had a lot of them and they can range from very heavy to light weight.

Achigan, yes and no. The warmth isn't lost, but yes, it is warmer with the shell outside. Inside though, you can wear another wool layer and have great freedom of movement, as opposed to wool on wool which tends to bind some with the friction. It also retains the quietness of wool with the liner inside, as well as the camo effect.

Check out golf clothing. They make a wind stopper jacket that is light weight cause it is only the wind stopper without another layer

achigan, I'm with you. I like a heavy weight wool shirt under a light windstopper outer jacket. I have an old brushed polyester(?) - definitely not cotton - hunting jacket that I bought in Germany 25 years ago. It's feather light, but with the wind/rain proof membrane and a heavy wool shirt underneath, I've sat for hours in a freezing drizzle and been comfortable. I've been wearing my Cabelas camo weather-proof fleece parka and bibs this year, but dragged the old hunting coat out to go get a Christmas tree. It was 10 degrees out and I remembered why I liked it so much.

The Asbell jackets and pullovers are designed for layering. The Windstopper vest we sell is made to accomplish exactly what you are looking for.

Sewn in liners add bulk and cost that we try and avoid.

Roger I'm good with the wind blocker vest. That decision has been good.
The questions I have now are
1. Is the extra heavy too heavy? Its ask she has for esb or esg. I was, maybe still am, concerned I ordered too heavy.
2. How packable are these? I want this till go with me on a week long canoe/camp trip in the MN boundarywaters. ( but space is limited). My woolrichs don.t compress well for packing.

Just wondering how things turned out with your order...
I had the heavyweight zippered, hooded Asbell jacket. I definitely wouldn't consider it "too heavy," but it's not really packable either. For going packable and light, wool is not really the best solution. However, it's advantages outweigh the disadvantages in my opinion.
Also wondering if anyone ended up trying to line the jackets themselves. Been looking at buying some Polartec Windbloc fleece by the yard. It is nearly whisper quiet in my experience (compared to a taffeta or nylon it's no contest) and the softness of it would help with the wool (not that Asbell wool is too much of an itch problem). I don't think putting the Windbloc under the wool would be a problem too much in terms of losing the insulation value of the wool.

I wear a Swanndri shirt, if it's cold I wear a Gray wolf vest with the wind blocker over the Swanndri, and as long as I am moving around a little, these two do the job. I  must add  that I  usually  hunt  from  the  ground, so I am almost always  moving  around a little.

Tubbstru....my order hasn't arrived yet. Mrs asbell definitely didn't have my order in stock [med tall]. Well post asap when it arrives. I did email teresa and offered to simply pick it up at kzoo to save the rush of shipping or rush on order completion. She replied with it is shipping this week (this was last week).
