Jackal spotting at Murder Creek
« on: December 17, 2013, 10:53:00 AM »
Well I had the privilege of being among the first to shoot and play with South Cox's newest bow. The Jackal. The bow made it just in time to leave with me on the Wild Things hunt. And I mean just in time...

In fact the local postmaster brought it out. It didn't even make the regular mail run.

Now the jackal is a bit more of a traditional long bow handle than the coyote. I bought my first coyote from Cox about 6 weeks ago and quite frankly have been so impressed I can't imagine how it could get better. But he came close...

This is a pic that I think Ryan took but I'm not sure. It compares the handles of both the Jackal and Coyote.

Well the Jackal did make the hunt even though Bob and I weren't sure it was going to happen... And being a generous man... I let Bob open her up...

Looking at the riser face of the Jackal. These highlights of South's are one of my favorite features.

South is lucky the prototypes made it back to him! Me and Randy were plotting on how to make them "dissapear" lol!
I see a lot of positive feed back from this riser.

Now on to the shooting...

My first real group at 15 yards.

First arrow I split open a little scrub oak I was using for a target. I was shooting Easton Traditional 400s wrapped and 3 fletched with 5" sheilds. 100 gr brass inserts and 125 gr field points.

Never shot a group like that with the first arrows out of ANY bow I have ever owned. Admittedly I am knew to trad archery (I've only been shooting 4 years) but dadgum... I love this bow.

It's posing for a glamour shot at the cabin at Murder Creek.

Hunting with me on the Creek.

The specs.

Overwatch... Jackal style.

My thoughts on this bow go along these lines.

Admittedly I am a fan of South's bows. They just fit me. I shoot my Coyote well and LOVE the handle on it. When I saw this project I was intrigued. I've shot a few of the more traditional long bows and enjoy them but I really have liked the handle on the Coyote. However with that said... South changed the game in my opinion here. I like the grip angle, the thickness, and the weight. When I draw the bow it naturally settles in my hand like it should in my opinion. I didn't feel like I had to "correct" my grip for the bow. The bow almost grips itself.

Hand shock- There ain't none. You can see the set up and we had the brace height set at 7 1/4" if I remember right. Double string silencers. Easton Traditional 400s 3 fletched and wrapped. 100 gr brass inserts. 125 gr field points. I didn't feel any vibrations. It just ate them up.

Being new to trad archery an essential part of it to me is that a bow has to be easy to tune. The jackal was a cinch to tune. A few twists of the string and setting the nock correctly (Bob I adjusted it down a little bit when I got to shooting it) and the arrows were hard to keep from hitting each other.

Size- I REALLY like the length. THis is a quick handling bow. And IMO even going to a 58" would not hurt the shooting ability of this bow at all. And it would make it a KILLER blind bow for turkeys and deer in blinds.

I hope this bow does well for South. I know I'll be getting with him about ordering it.

Like James, my first impression of the Jackal prototype was very positive.  Really liked the grip - felt very "natural" in hand!

Braced her up to 7 1/4", set nock height to accommodate my 3 under shooting style and headed out to the 3-d targets at Wild Things camp.

Shooting a 595 grain 400 VAP EFOC set-up, the bow blasted them into the relatively new 3-d targets!  It was shooting so well, that I would have felt comfortable taking it straight out to the woods hunting!

South Cox has a winner here!

kadbow- 60" on this one. But like I said I think South could go to 58" and not loose anything at all. I experienced NO finger pinch. And I shoot a tad over 28".

Joe VT- I'm not sure. Maybe South or Ryan will weigh in with that info. I didn't think to measure them.

I can't wait to shoot this bow! I am on the passaeound list. I have a Custom Tracker, which I believe is the old name for the Coyote. It is the St Jude's bow, Hope, from 2011. I am a longbow guy and struggled with the handle on my bow a bit. I even reshaped it a bit to fit me better. As soon as Ryan posted the thread about the passaeound of the Jackal, I was in! The new riser looks like it will be a perfect fit for me!

Steve,  hopefully there will be more than one at KZOO.  If things go as planned,  Boone "the traveling Jackal" will be there too.

Boone got to take a trip on the Waccamaw river to hunt hogs. I am on the left holding Boone. No shots taken on hogs but we got plenty of shots at squirrels and came real close a couple times.

Great bow guys and a great shooter I enjoyed my time with it. Thank you
