Highs and Lows of Fall 2013
« on: December 30, 2013, 12:05:00 AM »
Now that 2013 is coming to a close I thought I would post some pictures from the fall. It was a wonderful time spent in the mountain and the Missouri woods.

I started the fall off by spending a week in Colorado running ragged trying to get on a bull.  It was a blast and I had a spike and a calf within range.

A bull chasing two cows came within 45 yards but the cows ended up getting out in front of the bull far enough to get my wind.  They turned around and came back to the bull just as he was turning his attention my way.  The cows took him out of my set up just as I was putting tension on the string.

Bugling was limited and the hunting was hard but I wouldn't trade the experience.

After returning to Missouri I shifted my focus to deer hunting. I've been using a canoe to get into some hard to access areas on a public land spot.  I had spooked a nice buck out of one of the spots last year and was determined to be in the right spot this year.  Sure enough I saw two good bucks out of that spot this year.  Unfortunately one of them winded me and the other was bedded near my stand as I entered in the afternoon.

So goes the luck of this year.  Close but no cigar.  The Missouri deer herd size is supposed to be down and I think the EHD has reduced the number of mature bucks.  Having said that I've still seen a lot of deer but just can't seem to be in the right spot at the right time.

I did manage to shoot a yearling doe on one of my canoe trips.  She made it to the river before she expired so she was a bit wet in my pictures.

I was there when my brother connected on a nice buck at our family farm. It was great to be there with him.

I wish these pictures included me standing over a nice bull or a good buck but it wasn't meant to be this year.  I'll still count my blessings to have a family that allows me to hunt and the opportunity to experience wild places. I pushed my body further than I thought it could go at times.  In other moments I just sat and soaked in the beauty of the outdoors.  All in all it was a good fall and I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Chris

As you conveyed, it's not all about the "hero shot". Appreciating the opportunity to be out is so important. And you did get some meat out of it.
Looks like some great days afield.

Great pics. Chris. I was wondering how the Elk hunt went.

Nice looking water rig. Looking into something similar for myself this year. I've lost enough weight I can actually fit in a Kayak now.LOL

Hope the Family is doing well.
