Did you try KennyM?

Ok, not afraid to show my ignorance!  :)    What is it that is different in "spalted" veneers?

Looking at Yellowdogs bow and it is right pretty, but what is the spalted part?

It is a fungus that produces the black veins that run through the wood.  I think there is a fine line between spalted wood and rotten wood.

Definition of Spalting.

"Spalting is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. Although primarily found in dead trees, spalting can also occur under stressed tree conditions or even in living trees. Although spalting can cause weight loss and strength loss in the wood, the unique coloration and patterns of spalted wood are sought after by woodworkers."

Subtle but beautiful IMO. Some spalted veneers have way more character but I like these a lot.

Izzy, those are nice.  Guess our local beetle killed pine with blue stains in it is spalted?
