Bear grizzly and FMJ
« on: December 30, 2013, 11:22:00 AM »
Guys,

I need to set up a Bear grizzly 50# @ 28" with full metal jackets for my brother (new to recurve) He draws 28" and i would like to build him a heavier arrow. Any suggestions on spine (340/400?) do we need to shoot full length? do we need to use the brass inserts to add weight up front.

I shoot A.D.'s so tuning is new to me. lol
Any starting points on where to start?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

One advantage of the FMJ is that they are relatively heavy compared to carbon only arrows...another advantage is the ready availability of the brass hit inserts...I would guess .400 full length and then front end load them...the .340 would be too stiff

I set out a while ago to reduce my herd of 40 bows...And I am finally down to 42

Yep, I'd start with 400s full length and trim as necessary. Carbons are funny, you get to a certain length and they stiffen up FAST. If you want to go all the way down to 28" it might take a 500.  A little more length doesn't hurt and it give you a few more grains anyway.
