Cow elk hunt
« on: December 31, 2013, 02:02:00 AM »
This hunt actually started back in September with a extra cow tag I had. I was only able to hunt this hunt a total of 3 days during the regular archery season. I wasn't able to get out much and spent most of those days helping others try to get their elk. We were on elk every day and had some close calls but no elk were taken home. The late season started in mid November but work and life made it hard to get out. I was only able to get out a total of two days until yesterday. Here is a few pic's of the high desert country.

This doesn't look like your typical elk country in this photo but look at this rub at this bubbler with fresh tracks too. Even in September they will be in the low country here.

Lots of wild horses to watch out here. I have even had horses push elk off water holes on me!

Yesterday I finally got out again. I started off hunting a area I had got to fifty yards on a small group of cows on my first trip out in November. I didn't see much in the way of sign so I started covering country glassing and looking for tracks. Its big country and you can cover a lot of ground glassing and looking for track. After finding some fresh tracks I climbed to a small hill in this photo and started glassing. After about two hours of glassing I spotted a good herd of about 50 elk accosted the valley on their beds.

After making a game plan I started off after them. By the time I had made it to the area they were they had gotten off their beds and started to feed. It was getting late quick and I was making a lot of noise in the old crusty snow. I decided to set up next to a few junipers and hope that they would feed down to me before dark. They stayed out a good 600 yards for what seemed like an eternity but by pure luck they started in my direction. It was getting late but some were getting closes.  One of the young cows branched off and started walking into one of my shooting lanes. With one elk in the freezer already I wasn't worried about size and let the arrow fly. The arrow looked good but didn't penetrate the off side shoulder so she couldn't run well. After the wait it was already dark but with the arrow pining the shoulder the trail was short. Even being a small one it made for a long night but a good night.

Good work!
That animal looks like the perfect "freezer topper upper".
We've got a "winter wonderland" here, not much of that out there.
