I have a big kangaroo pelt

I've been wanting to make a back quiver from this large kangaroo pelt I picked up for my 16 year old son. I would like some advise before cutting it up. My thoughts were to make it hair side out. I thought about leaving the tail attached and using it for a strap but am afraid it would be a weak point after time. Has anyone used a kangaroo pelt for this and if so , would you have changed anything? I've seen the tutorial in the how to section and am looking to use it for a guide. Thanks in advance for any help ideas.

I have never seen any hunting gear made from kangaroo, but I have had football shoes and boots made from it. They were very light, soft, and strong. Good luck with it and post some pics when you finish.

Mark and cut it out from the flesh side so you don't cut too much hair. A sharp razor works well to cut it out. Do your stitching from the inside too and reverse it (hair out) when it is sewn together.
If you try to use the tail for the strap the hair will be going the wrong way for it to be comfortable. You could cut the tail off, reverse I and stitch it back on.

kangaroo hide is tough!!the under belly makes great shelf material--really tough and quiet!!
pulled this on line--
[Kangaroo leather is lighter and stronger than the hide of a cow or goat. It has 10 times the tensile strength of cowhide and is 50% stronger than goatskin.]

I have never made a quiver out of roo but have had several gloves made out of it & it is the best leather for that job. Extremely abrasive resistant tough & strong for it's weight. The only thing is it is soft & pliable & may not be stiff enough to hold enough shape for a back quiver, maybe a plains style quiver would be more suitable.

Thanks for the advise, looks like I need to do some more planning / rethinking before getting started .
