Back from Texas, great time
« on: January 09, 2014, 04:19:00 PM »
Well I am finally back home on Guam. Had a great time on my annual foray to Texas. Memories were made.

I started off at Solana. Ice storm on the 2nd day and high north winds made the hunting a challenge for the duration of the hunt, plus the deer were just not coming in to the stands. Never saw a mature buck but they have changed their policy and now want you to take inferior bucks, something they have needed for a while to cull the herd and they do not charge you for a cull. Did not see any pigs until the last evening hunt, then a boar tried to commit suicide. Was shooting at a nice boar broad side at 15 yards and another ran in front and I hit him almost head on in the throat center chest area. Nocked him plum down and as he lay there quivering and squealing, I tried to get another arrow on the string. He got his hind legs under him and bulldozed out of the area behind a large cedar.

Heard more squealing and crashing and my arrow break and was silent, figured he was dead right there.

At dark when John the guide came to get me we found good blood at the shot site and for the next 150 yards, I mean a blood rail Ray Charles could have followed. Last blood was softball size, then nothing. That pig bled more than anything I have seen and we could not find him. Looked again the next morning with no luck. Do not know what happened but guess that is hunting.

Then I was off to my dear friend Smitty's place in South Texas for 10 days of fun.

First evening I passed on a nice 8 point, but he was only about 2 1/2 years old and will be a great deer in a couple of years.

I regretted that later but it is what it is.

I hate turkeys and Javilina, I hate them ,LOL.

My shooting left something to be desired on the smaller critters, missed 4 javi and 3 Tom turkeys, guess I was just not picking my spot, shaved hair or feathers on all of them but they laughed at me.

Finally on the 7th day I had a shot at an old spike that Smitty wanted taken out at 15 yards. He pulled a matrix move at release and a small 8 that was with jumped forward and took the arrow, again committed suicide, LOL. Not the biggest but I will take him.

Killed a nice 120 pound boar on the next evening, did not get pics of him as my camera died. But he will eat just fine.

I will post more pics of the buck in the field once Smitty emails them to me.

I told Smitty, after I killed the small 8 that I would probably see the biggest deer of my life the next sit, and guess what, huge 11 point really tall and at least 21" wide came in chasing does at my blind, all I could do is sit and watch, but what a show he put on for about 20 minutes.

Processed all the meat and took it to my Uncle in Sweeny, TX, they appreciated it and fixed me up a mess of fried backstraps, yum.

Sounds like it was a fun trip.  I find that when I hunt animals that I'm not familiar with my shooting goes out the window.

Thanks for taking us along Danny,it sounds like a wonderful trip. Watch out for the brown tree snakes back there on Guam.
