Penetration difference between a 160 Snuffer and Woodsman
« on: January 21, 2014, 09:42:00 PM »
Say the arrow is 525 grains going 175 fps.

Any noticeable penetration difference on deer, turkey, javelina, and normal sized pigs?

Probably a wash.  The Woodsman is a bit sleeker, but the Snuffer carries a bit more weight forward. That weight arrow at that speed will probably go through everything you list with either head.

Both heads will definitely do the job. Smaller diameter Woodsman will probably have a slight edge in penetration but the Snuffer will open up a larger hole. Personal choice for me is Snuffer....

Just what Joe said, shot  2 does this year, one with each head, 12 yards, same bow, same arrows and weight. Woodsman a complete pass through, Snuffer punched through the far side, larger hole.Either is a great head.

I bet if you shot 100 deer with each head you'd see a significant difference in penetration.

And I bet w/ those 100 deer you would see a significant difference in blood trails.

And if all 100 shots were true, you'd see no difference in freezer space. lol.

I shoot completely through deer with WW. Have never shot completely through with the snuffers. I use snuffers on turkeys for just that reason.

On that size game... Woodsman about 4" in the dirt on the other side, and the Snuffer maybe 3"...  Except the turkey... They seem to "catch" arrows more often then not...  For which the big Snuffer does more damage...

I'd go for snuffers,,, but I'm bias ever since I bought 6 woodsman screw ins and they all wobbled.

Hhhmmm I have both, just picked up the snuffers last fall, going to set them up for my new bow, nice to have this input before I do.
Too many bows to list, and so many more I want to try!  Keep the wind in your face, and your broadheads sharp.

Not sure about the WW, but a blood trail from a snuffer was the best I've ever seen.

Hmm...trying to decide the same for next year. I have had great luck with Snuffers, WW, and Muzzy Phantom 4bld using bows 65# plus. I was getting better speed/weight than you mention and never had a issue with pass-through.
I have now dropped to 55# and would be getting maybe slightly less speed than you have mentioned here.
I it's any help, I have had unbelievable blood trials with the Snuffer but never shabby with the WW.

assuming they are the regular woodsmans on adaptors, Did you try to re "seat" the heads?  Ya shouldn't have to do that but it shouldn't be a problem

I have never had anything but great blood trails and penetration using woodsmans. No doubt the snuffer would perform just as good on the animals you mentioned with the arrow weight and speed mentioned as well with possibly a bit more blood. The only time I would hesitate with the big snuffer is with truly large hogs. Why not but both and carry a few of each in your quiver?

I've only used snuffers for deer hunting.  The buck in my avatar was from a 50 lb. bow.
I own other heads, but dang it, I just keep grabbing the snuffers because I love short blood trails.
I would feel very confident shooting snuffers with your set up.

I've had trouble with penetration with Snuffers in the past especially when hunting from tree stands and if the shots were close and required shooting the animal high. Back then I was shooting bows 65-70#. Solution was multifaceted. Woodsman heads solved any penetration problem I ever had and blood trails were just as good. I refrain from taking shots that are too close if  I am in a tree and the angle is acute. I hunt more from the ground now and enjoy the comfort of Double Bull blinds particularly when the weather is on the cold side. My broad head choice now is the stainless steel Razorcap. Woodsmans are great but the RC steel is better and I got a great deal on 50 of them a number of years ago. Large multi blade broad heads  are fine but the smaller Woodsman forced me to take a different look at them. Sharpenability and tenability are paramount and the edge holding characteristics of the RC have sold me. MOst all big game I have take with them has gone down in sight.

The snuffer has an approximately 30% higher slash factor than the woodsman. Don't know how that equates to penetration, however that 30% difference is reflected in the greater resistance  encountered by the snuffer.
