Kodiak/Spring bar mod

Thinking about doing a similar modification to my Kodiak canvas tent like the one pictured.  They guy who has this uses a two dog stove. Would you do this? I would have a professional put the jack in. Tired of damp propane heat in wet conditions.

I have a 10x10 Kodiak and thought of doing the same thing.  If you do it let us know how it turns out.

I have a Springbar and have thought about it. I decided not to. I use this as a spring and fall tent when a floored tent can be an advantage in Ky. I can get by with the buddy heater then, just to knock the chill off.

I do want a dedicated hot tent; and plan to have one at some point for winter camping. I much prefer a floorless tent for this type tent.

I have a 10X10 ft. Cabelas Alagnak with a wood stove that's not much different, so I say go for it.

I think a canvas tent is okay with a wood stove, but sure wouldn't do it with any nylon tent.  What would happen in case of a fire would be too horrible to think about!

One more thing,  I would put the stove jack next to the door.  If you notice every tent originally built with a stove jack that's where it's located.  In case of a fire it's easier to shovel the mess out the door.

If an additional wall tent was in the budget I would pick one up. Making my family tent more suitable for elk camp is the way to go at this time in my life.

What do you Kodiak owners think about size for 2 adults and 2 kids (6 & 8 yrs.)?

I put two adults, two kids, two english mastiffs in mine. Everyone on cots except dogs. I also have space for my big budd heater. I have the 10x14.

Talked to Don at 4 Dog Stoves. Based on his advise I ordered the 4 Dog model. Made sure to order a fireproof mat from him as well.

Getting the stove jack put in on Sunday.  Should been done inside two weeks.  I will post pictures when I get the tent back.

I'd want a section of the stove pipe to flex a good bit. These tents are designed to move with the wind.

I have had my Kodiak in some high winds. Woke up and saw many broken tents. I slept like a baby. They flex a little but not as much a a tent with flat sides.

making your own jack is really easy, two pieces of stainless tin about 1x1 foot.  put some weather striping around the edge of one, cut your stack hole in both, screw them together with some duct screws.  when you cut the tent cut it double the size of the stack and sandwich it between the two pieces.  then add a bit of stainless screen to the end of the stack in the shape of a rifle porting for a spark retarder.

Kept me dry and warm in some nasty wet weather. Stove is the four dog model. Really happy with the work done on my tent.

Tim tell us about the jack, What is cost and where did you have it done. I have the 10 x 14 and love it but want the jack put in professionally.

I have a 10x10 Springbar. I'm interested in the jack also. I'm thinking a 3 dog stove would be plenty.
