I've seen quite a few coyotes over the years but this is a first for me. This sucker looks bobtailed to me. I included a normal coyote for comparison.

Used to trap coyotes, the bobtailed ones showed up every now and then.

Hey Cory. Doing fine. Hope Robert's trappers worked the coyotes over these past few weeks. Danged critters are at epidemic levels over there.

that one either got shot, bit, or trap-snapped off, I'm guessing.

It could be an escapee from a pen. Do you have a coyote pen close. People run dogs in coyote pens generally 40 acres or larger and the coyotes tails are usually snipped off. I hunt close to a coyote pen and if I see a coyote with a bobbed tail its one that was in the pen and escaped. I seriously doubt a trap snapped it off.

Most likely bit off in a fight with either another yote or a dog.
I did shoot at one several years ago and misjudged the rate he/she was moving. All I got from the shot was the tail.
It yelped and kicked on the afterburners.

Maybe he sat down on the trap. That would sting a bit.

Never seen one with a bobbed tail but have seen one with mange. Size varies quite a bit, too.
