Question for the Profin know-it-alls
« on: February 06, 2014, 03:09:00 PM »
...or anyone else with some good info.

I just need to know what I should stay away from when sealing with Profin.

Will I need to use water or oil based stain if I want to seal with Profin.

Also, can I seal oil based Testor's enamel with Profin?  If not, can I paint on top of the Profin?  I've had good luck with the Testor's enamel not being sealed in the past...it's held up well.  Just curious.

Thanks.

Adam

I'll be watching this thread, I just bought some profin myself. I have whispering wind cresting paint and alcohol based stain. I have gasket lacquer as a backup.

The only common compatibillity problem I've experienced is that you can use it over Fletch Lac but not under. It will also put a yellow tinge over white. I don't use testors paint so I am not sure about those.

If you do a search on profin there are several threads that answer most of the questions you might have.

Profin works very well over Rustoleum, MinWax stains and Whispering Winds crest paint in my personal experience!   I've never used Testors enamel...

Well I dont know it all, but I've used it for a few years.

Stain-WB will work but will raise the grain..Alc will work better and wont raise the grain and can penetrate better than OB stains. I use minwax OB  wood finish stain, Ive seen a little bleed off when dipping in profin not much though. Varithane stains bleed off alot more IMO. You could always wipe on the first coat after staining, then dip the remaining coats.

Crown paint- Ive used Krylon & Rustoleum OB & WB spray cans without issue.

Cresting paint- I use 99% Testors OB enamel & some acrylic enamel and Whisperingwind Ac enamel. None have had an issue when dipping in profin or minwax OB poly.

The ONLY problem I've had with cresting running is with OB metalics ie. gold & silver. they will run no matter how long you let them dry first. Use a WB acrylic for these and you will be fine, I use Whisperingwind paints for this.

Tip - Let your finished cresting dry till the next day before dipping and a day between dip coats.

Thats what I know..

Have fun..

Eric
