Footwear - Your preferences
« on: September 17, 2007, 01:42:00 PM »
Ok, We've seen the threads about the type of bow we use, the arrows (wood, carbon, alum.), broadhead, type of quiver, wool vs cotton vs synthetic, etc.....

I'm curious what folks are wearing on their feet.  Deer season here in MO opened Sat and I am still trying to find boots, mocs, sneakers, etc that are comfortable, quiet, and functional.  I've tried the jungle boot, Danners, Redheads, LaCrosse etc.  Heck I think I have more footgear that my wife has    :scared:   .

That being said I am looking for something that is light and quiet when moving through the woods.  Actually, if I'm going to do some serious stalking I remove the footwear and rely on a good pair of thick wool socks.

Let's hear what you wear and why.

LL Bean 12" hunting boots.  This is my first year with them and so far I really like them. They are not insulated and quite comfortable to sneak thru the woods in.

Early season (above 40 degrees or so), you won't find a better ground shoe than a pair of Converse hi-tops.  Best stalking shoe ever made.  I swear you can step on a dime and tell if it's heads or tails.

I bought a pair of Danner Pronghorns for later in the year and so far they are great.  We will see how well they do at 20 degrees.

I have a pair of Non Insulated Danners for early season, 600 gram Danners for when it starts to get cold, and 1000 gram Rockys for when it gets really cold.  The last few years the 1000 gram boots havent seen the light of day!!

For warmer weather I use a pair of Rocky Bearclaws. I bough these back around 1989, give or take.  LOL

For colder weather I have a pair of Lacrosse Ice Kings.

I've been using a pair of gum rubber skateboard shoes, very quiet. I find that once I'm in the area I'll hunt i move so slowly that ankle support isn't a big issue. I've been thinking about some hi-top desert boots for a little more support. Also considered the Converse...thanks for the tip.

I've thought about the converse and may have to look into that.  The problem that I find is most of the boots have soles that are too stiff for my liking.  Would love to find a pair of mocs that I would bust my rearend with when walking on wet leaves or mud.

The vibram soles are great in certain terrain, but not what I want for stalking.

I have a new pair of Gore Tex Salomon Elios Mids, anybody have any experience with these for hunting? They're a good performance boot, but I haven't had them long enough to know about how they would work for hunting.

I like wrestler's shoes for stalking, but go to the Schnee's or Muck boots when it gets cold.
Is it too late to be what I could have been?

Got a pair of the stalking boots from sportsmans guide.  They were supposed to be waterproof ( that lasted about a second), but other than that, they are great.  You can feel everything, and they are camo to boot.  Well worth it for 20 bucks

This would take a book. I am the Imelda Marcos of hunting boots. Most of what I use, you can't get anymore, anyway.  :(

I usually go with Cabela's Bruins with some scent-lok supposedly (not a great believer)and 800gr of Thinsulate. When it gets really cold I have some boot blankets for them and if it gets REALLY cold I just put on my Sorrels.

Another vote for LL Beans Maine hunting boots. Had a pair for a couple of decades and got a new pair last year. The new pair is better than the old ones, the soles are softer and the leather is "like butter".

I have Brownings and I am very happy with them. I feel free to move for stalking or walk long distances without thinking it twice.
