Adhesive for Inserts??
« on: February 25, 2014, 11:45:00 AM »
To all you carbon arrow crafters:
What adhesive do you recommend for installing brass weighted inserts into carbon shafts?

I am fitting up some Gold Tip Carbon shafts and don't have a clue what the best adhesive would be. I do know,, as I am experimenting to get the best flight, I would like to be able to remove any inserts I use to swap for lighter or heavier ones.

So what do you folks recommend?

I highly recommend just getting some industrial grade glue sticks to use in a hot glue gun and use them like regular hot melt. The ones I get melt at a lower temperature than most hot melt glues and I've not had an insert pull out with it.

Quick Stick hot melt from Big Jim's. You won't have to worry about losing inserts in targets and can easily get them out any time you want. This stuff is the best glue out there!

I just installed some a few nights ago with Bohning Insert Iron. Seemed to work good. Only drawback is it takes 72 hours to fully cure. I used this because I was in the same boat as you are, and this was suggested.
Good Luck!

Off topic a bit, but I would suggest getting some of the GT insert weights. They screw in from the rear and you can change them for lighter or heavier with GT's long (36")hex wrench. I believe they're available in 50gr and 100 gr, so with an 11 gr standard GT insert you can go up over 335gr, or down to around 110 gr total up front with 100 to 225gr points.

I normally use hot melt glue for my inserts, but if you wanted to epoxy up the inserts and some sleeve footings for stumping arrows, this would still allow you a huge range of flexibility.

I just made up some carbons to try, and bought some Steel Force Beyond Bond from the Footed Shaft. Have not had the time to try it yet, but the guy who sold it to me said they've had good results with it.

What I use for installing inserts in my carbon arrows whether aluminum or brass inserts is a AAE 2-part slow cure 24 hr. epoxy.Alot stronger then any 5 minute or fast curing epoxy. But I think a key thing is to properly prep the shafts and inserts.I etch the inside of the carbon shaft with a bore brush and scratch the insert up with sandpaper. Then clean everything with a alcohol, let dry and then epoxy the inserts in.Haven't had any failures with inserts pulling out.

I've been using the Bohning Cool Flex (blue stick) because it's locally available, seems to work fine. Have used the Insert Iron as well. I would only use the Insert Iron again if I really wasn't planning on moving the inserts for a while. It works great and is technically heat reversible, but it takes more heat than I like to use on carbons. Either way, be sure to use indirect heat (ie. heat the point or use an insert tool and heat it), never apply flame / heat directly to the carbon shaft.

I use a hot melt glue.  Seem to hold the inserts in fairly well.  Haven't pulled any out in a target yet.  I use a hot melt because it's reversible, and I often like to change insert weights.  Much more difficult to do without damaging the shaft if they're epoxied in.

Big Jim's hot melt or the 24 hr two part epoxy. This is what has worked best for me.

I wanted to add that the new brass inserts have some type of coating. I guess to keep them new looking? Once I started heating the inserts up really hot and melt/ cook the coating off, I have not have had any problems. I have never had any luck with the blue stick glue.

I made the same post on another site a while back and it seemed to popular consensus was insert iron.

Have had great results with hot melt from Big Jim's. No problems at all. Just make sure inside of shaft is relatively clean and dry. Good product.

I also use Big Jims hotmelt for carbon arrows.Been using it for years.I have had excellant results using it.It has outperformed other hotmelts I have used in the past.I often swap out inserts from the 28 grain aluminums to the 50 grain and 100 grain brass.I never use adhesive that wont allow the removel of inserts.

The hot melt I got from Jim came in a cupcake shape and will last me for years.
