I am an older man now and I have been on many many hunts in my life but one hunt is burned into my memory. I was hunting in central Indiana with my Uncle who got me into archery when I was about 8yrs old.
We had went out for several days and I had hunted the edge of a large field that had a small wooded island in its upper third. I had a real nice buck sneak past me the first day. He was a dandy but was 40 yds away and sneaking thru thick cover. Near dark I spotted 5 does come into that fields upper edge and go right into that small island of timber in the field. Eureka! I snuck out and they never saw me leave.
Next afternoon I went back and made a quick and dirty ground blind in that island. It was thick with brush but a do-able shot. Sho nuff about dusk here comes the girls and there is more this time. They came in behind me and I had to turn around to get a shot. I had a hole 10 in diameter to shoot through and hit the upper edge of said hole to deflect my arrow and missed my shot. The does exploded and ran into the woods. I was disappointed but I had my chance and was laughing at myself for missing an 8 yd shot.
I left the blind and started back to the Uncles truck about 1/2 mile away. As I cleared the edge of the island and picked up a farm road to walk back on I came to this fields edge and looked into the adjoing field of cut stubble corn. There standing directly between the truck and myself were 5 mature bucks in a group spread out maybe 40 yds between them all. One was a giant and would have went into the 170's easily. Super high tines and a bunch of em. The next largest was maybe a 150 class with a huge body. Older guy by the gray on him Id say. The remaining 3 were maybe 120-130 class deer. I stopped and just stared. They had spotted me before I spotted them by a few seconds. They all broke at a trot and disappeared into the timber. I walked to the truck and climbed in and smoked a cigarette as I decided to keep this to myself. I finally told the Uncle about it a year later as I didnt believe he would believe me. I dont think he really did but its as true as mamas chicken dinners on a Sunday.
