Bamboobacked osage bow
« on: March 02, 2014, 10:00:00 AM »
Hello everybody,
Last week, I've been on an archery exhibition in Germany and fell in love with a bamboo backed osage bow, built like a "Perry reflex" bow. What do you think about these bows?
Of course, I tried one (65", 45#@28") and was surprised how smooth and fast it was. Does glass make a bow harder to draw?
The bow didn't have a sight window, or an arrow rest, but the arrows immediatedly went, where I was looking, it seemed to be made for me... .
Is this still called a "primitive" bow?
I'd be very happy about some answers and opinions and perhaps some pics of other bamboo backed bows without the use of glass, or/and carbon.
Thanks a lot!

To see more bamboo backed bows check out the bowyers bench threads.

Not sure of the term primitive.

A 45 pound glass bow and a 45 pound wood bow both should pull the same. The feel will be different depending on if one or the other wants to stack some towards full draw.
Another issue is preload where it starts at a higher pull weight to start.

The term primitive at the 3D shoots I have attended state that the bows cannot have any glass on them at all. They can be laminated but only with natural materials such as wood, sinew, horn, etc. Most of those I have been to do allow modern string construction.
