Cocobolo bows?
« on: April 02, 2014, 11:06:00 AM »
So I'm ordering a new bow soon and I've already made up my mind as to the veneers (going with a darker Myrtle Burl), but as far as the riser is concerned I wanted to go with something darker with a reddish hint--I was thinking cocobolo or bubinga.  I would be using a yellow leather grip (instead of the usual black) and I think the contrast would be nice.  Can anyone share any pictures of nicely figured cocobolo or bubinga?

I don't have any pics but I just ordered some coco and tiger myrtle for a riser from Big Jim. Going with the tiger myrtle for veneers too. Looks good in my mind, we'll see how's she turns out!

This is the grip of a Blacktail Elite VL one-piece I used to own. I have no idea where this bow has run off too!  It is the best figured Cocobolo I've seen to date.

This bow also has Myrtle flares.

I like the seamless look of the belly of that Blacktail Elite. Now that's some pretty wood!

I have a chechen riser on my cari-bow. I can't load pictures, I'm not that smart. It's a nice deep red, as another option

I think Norm's work (Blacktail) is at the very top of the heap.  There are a couple others there with him as well.

Every time I go digging for old photos of this Coco Blacktail I am reminded that I've never seen as nice a bow in cocobolo. Makes me wonder how dumb I was to let it go on.

Wingnut started a thrread on the availability of cocobolo in the near future, better get on the list real soon.

all beautiful pictures and bows guys!  I'm still on the fence as to what I want...but I know it has to be figured and dark reddish in color.  Maybe snakewood or figured rosewood.  Decisions decisions...

that blacktail is pretty close...gorgeous.

Here's my Toelke Whip- riser is "dark" Cocobolo.  It's like the wood is almost black with light streaks, but glows faint red in bright light..kinda like a smoldering piece of wood.  The other side of the riser is a little lighter with more figure.

You might consider Bolivian Rosewood specifically.  Or perhaps a wood with a red stain applied.  Chechen, Sapele or Goncalo Alves with a stain would be interesting.  If you're real picky you can have the bowyer take pics of the riser block wiped with alcohol to reveal what the wood will likely look like finished.

That Blacktail was nuts!!
