« on: April 06, 2014, 09:10:00 AM »
working on some wood shafts and got the big dipper from three rivers.
do I have to use gasket lacquer in there or can I use lacquer I buy off the shelf at a big box store?
anyone have any good recipes?

Actual lacquer is hard to find at a big box store.  What does work very well is polyurethane dipped without the gasket.  I prefer a solvent base poly like Minwax thinned about 3:1 with a good paint thinner or mineral spirits.  Others like the water base polys like Polycrylic from Minwax.  Gloss finishes are tougher and I find the solvent base to be tougher and give much less target burn.

I'll let the water base guys give you their recipes.  In its defense, the water base is easy to work with, dries quickly and does a good job.

ok - if I thin the poly down 3:1, and dip without the gasket, about how many coats? can I crest with enamel?
thanks for the info

3 coats.  Enamel should work, but test your brand.  Krylon Short Cuts work very well if you can find them.  Try True Value Hdwe.
