Truck topper bow carrier?
« on: April 28, 2014, 09:14:00 AM »
I am looking for an inside the bed bow holder, anybody have one or a website I could check out?

Needs to fit inside a 99 Tacoma. Would prefer not to have to lay it on the bed.

I'm thinking about making one myself for my longbow. I plan on useing a PVC pipe capping and padding one end and using a padded clean out fitting on the other.  I would  like to pad the inside of tube with some pipe insulation the kind they wrap pipe with if I can find the right stuff. If not I will just keep my bow in the bow sock.
I'm going to mount it in my truck bed by simply strapping it to my tonnue cover clamps so it won't be on the bed.if you have a,topper you could mount it to the topper clamps.
Don't know if this helps you I know you probably looking for something commercial made. But I just thought I'd throw my idea out there   :)

Mr. fingers is thinking along the same lines as I was.  If you cover has areas that are reinforced in the roof (for mounting hangers, etc) you could mount the pipe from those areas.

I have an old Dodge that I plan to drill a couple holes in the ridge of the bed (below the topper, horizontaly) and screw in some of those padded bike carrier hooks to keep my bow off the bed. We'll see how it works out...

Search ATV gun clamps.  Mount those to the bed rails or ceiling of topper.

I built a simple shelf above the wheel well on one side. It's about the handiest thing I ever did. Works for bows, bird guns, fishing poles, groceries, you name it it works.

I also built a self going across the bed sitting on the bed rails up near the sliding rear window and that also is super handy.

Also carpeted a sheet of plywood to lay in the bed of the truck. Makes it nice and comfy to climb into to load the truck with gear and also makes a soft place for setting stuff that you don't want to slide around and get scratched up.

i'll try and take some pics tonight and get them posted here tommorrow.

I have a couple of old gun racks on the inside wall of the shell. Keep bows in a sock laying in hooks. Never had a problem.

More brain storming....maybe two sets of "artificial rain gutters" from thule secured to the hard cover then a set of crossbars/towers that a long pelican case could be secured to....

Try fishing rod holders.  I use padded gun holders hanging behind the seats works well.

I was thinking of affixing a net to the roof of my topper that I could lay the bows in. In Colorado you have to have your bow and arrows encased in a hard cover if you want to transport them on a ATV or UTV. Was thinking if I ever get rich and can afford to buy a UTV that I would get one of those hard body car top carriers and build a padded wood cradle to hold the bows in.

I use pvc tubes.  In hot weather white, and a black one for cold.  Bows are in thick socks.  The nice thing about the tubes is protection when bouncing up the mountain and having food boxes and water cans busting loose and falling on them.  We have some long rough uphill pulls to get into good country
This year I was thinking of making a foam retainer to stick the longbow tips in to ride even more comfortably while in the tube.
My son has a dog bench seat cover for his back seat, that has possibilities for an easy ride for a bow

I have the fishing rod holders sold at Walmart in the truck and used them in a topper for years. Good, cheap and they hold very well.
I would've taken better care of myself,if I'd known I was gonna live this long!

I just use the red Plastic gun racks Wally world sales. I remove one of the screws from the top frame and bottom frame of topper side windows.

Drill a hole in the top and bottom flange of the gun holder and install slightly longer screws through the gun rack into window frame. I install them on the rear and front window frame on both sides of the topper.

Thanks for the heads up guys, I'm going to see if I can dig around and find something that would work.
