Today, 5 May 2014 goes down in the record books as one of my best days afield. Work has been cancelled due to an EPA infraction and since all my to do's are mostly completed I decided to take my first day to myself in over a year.

I headed out to the lake to scout out some carp and what I found caused my jaw to drop. As far as you could see it was nothing but spawning fish. I could see the dead give aways of the gold fins reflecting in the suns light. Right next to shore the weeds were abound with shad spawning furiously.

I pulled on my waders , grabbed my bow and headed off to a fun filled morning. I could see my destination but wanted to take it slow during the 300 yard walk to see if I couldnt snag some stragglers.

My first victim was a shad . One shot, one kill

After working my way around some brush I got to the mudd and a couple inches of water.
From here I killed about 15 carp, but could still see where I wanted to go.

After this spot I moved up to the back of the cove and was in water about up to mymid calf. This is where I found the carp to my left and the gar to my right. I had the pick of the litter.

Now I pride myself on my shooting abilities so I do not shoot the ones under my feet as I prefer to get them from 8-13 yards. I took a couple around 5 yards and maxed out my 30 yards of string a couple times. Connecting more times thsn not around 28 yards. A BLAST to say the least.

I quit shooting fish around 95 taken for the day as I was sore and hot and wanted to go fish the spillway where I caught about 30 white bass before leaving for the day.

It was a great great day

I did not take multiple pics of the same killd and I landed about 8 doubles today which was amazing. Pics to come

I had about 8 doubles today which is always a blast.  These are all the pics and videos I did for fear of dropping my phone in the water and that would have made a great day not so great.

Outstanding, Brian!  What lake were you fishing if I can ask?  Hoping to get out to Sangchris this weekend.

Very nice!!!!
Just got in from checking a few of my hot spots. Here in Northern Mi its still cold water and temps. Was 37 degrees, spent 2 hours on the water and got 6 carp so at least i know they are in there. I cant wait until the action picks up in a couple weeks. Looks like you hit the perfect day! Congrats.

Looks like a great time.  Its funny how things get crazy when those things spawn!

Congrats!

I'm glad you're doing your part on the carp...invasive species and all (like pigs).

What do you do with the gar? Not judging, just wondering since they're native.

Nice shooting by the way.

I will smoke them if im in a position to remove them.  Or fertilizer, or crawdad traps or freeze untill furbearer season starts up.  They make great trap sets.

Also throw them ina field and use it to lure in yotes.
