homemade bug sprays
« on: May 12, 2014, 08:32:00 AM »
I've have a lot of problems with mosquitoes/nats during hunts and 3d tournaments. Didn't know if anybody had their own concoction they use. getting tired of using deet & various chemicals.

Not a home brew but the best natural fly dope without chemicals I have used, bar none, is Bite Blocker by Homs.

It works better than Badger IMO. Other than having an odor (not great for the hunt) it works great. I backcountry bushwack in shorts and never have had an issue regardless of the intensity of the bugs.

If you google essential oils for insect repellent you'll find all types of recipes. I personally use a commercially made cedar oil spray that works well as both an insect repellent and cover scent. If you're interested you can PM me for the web address.

I made one with a bunch of different ingredients once (including cedar), and it worked pretty well. However, it did not last long as sweat washed it off easily. There are some pretty good commercial products containing natural stuff and no DEET.

Fresh basil is supposed to work. Pull a leaf off the plant crumble it up and rub it on.

I have ground up rose hips and used as a lotion, works great for mosquitos but not for black flies.
