Shrew Hawk listing contest winner!!!! Tim Dougan!!
« on: May 22, 2014, 06:48:00 PM »
Okay, it's time to get serious!!!

Last year I offered a Shrew neck knife for the last 10 listers in the St. Jude's Auction.

This year it is a Shrew Hawk!!!

Here is how it works!!!

The last 10 (TEN) listers of items AT THE START of the St. Jude's Auction will be in the drawing.  You get 1 name in the pot FOR EACH item donated (so if you are one of the last 10 listers, and you list 10 items - you get 10 chances for the Shrew Hawk!!!),

Come on TG members!!!!  Make me have to cough it up again this year          !!!

"Comments from the Blacksmith about your Shrew Hawk

Each of these axes goes through several steps in the forging process to become the “Shrew Hawk” pictured here. A slit is chisel-cut in yellow hot mild steel, and the opening is forged to form the eye using a drift that matches the handle dimensions. After cooling, the blade blank is then slit, and a flattened piece of car leaf spring or drill rod is inserted and then forge-welded to form the cutting edge. Upon close examination of many of these hawks, a thin line can be seen near the sharpened edge which marks the weld line between the body of the blade and the cutting edge. The axes are heated to their ‘critical temperature’ and annealed overnight in dry wood ashes and then ground to their final shape. The cutting edge is heated in the forge and quenched in linseed oil to harden the blade and is then tempered to a purple or pigeon blue color. This gives the edge the ability to remain sharp through continued use but flexible so as to avoid the risk of damage. The hammer poll is not hardened and will nick or mar with heavy use. The handles are hickory or ash, and in the event a replacement is necessary, they will require some adjustment in order to achieve a proper fit.

Your ‘Shrew Hawk’ will give you years of service and will in all likelihood be around long after you will be! We offer a life-time warranty on these hawks and will replace any free of charge that fail through appropriate use. These axes will come in handy for a whole range of camp chores but really shine when used to help field dress animals in the woods. In over 25 years of forging, we have never had a case of an edged tool being returned to us because of blade failure.

Years ago, Ron carried the prototype of the “Shrew Hawk” until losing it while out hunting one day. Its replacement has been his constant hunting companion for over two decades.

I plan to use it for building blinds for turkeys with the environment around me.

I have to say, I'm in a place of transition and was on the fence about committing to the auction as a seller, but you personally have assured that I'll be putting up a couple listings tomorrow.

Hopefully I'm not alone. This was a great idea for getting people to post more listings, and convincing new members to join at the last minute.

Now I've got my fingers crossed!

Thanks for all the listings, TG members!   Have been traveling for nearly 9 hours, and just had an opportunity to check into TG!

Once the listings close, I will post a list here of the 10 participants and the number of chances each one gets!!

My beautiful bride, Alicia, will draw the winner of the Hawk when we get back from vacation on June 1st PM.

Thanks, again, to all TG members who stepped up to the challenge!      :notworthy:    :clapper:

Best of luck to you all!!!

Okay, I had to make an executive decision here.  Officially, listing was supposed to stop by the time the auction opened - 6 pm on the 24th.  However, I did not feel it was fair to exclude the last three listers over this point.

Sooo, the last 13 listers will be in the drawing.  Here are the TG handles and the number of times they will be entered in the drawing:

Tom Phillips    1X
Fletcher  2X
calmb4tehPwn   1X
Hackbow  2X
Matty  2X
Tim Dougan   2X
David Mitchell  1X
CoilSpring    1X
bowhuntingrn   2X
Mudd   1X
Walt Francis  1X
Magnus   1X
David Mitchell  1X

Good luck to all of you in the drawing to be held next weekend!

Thanks to all the TG Auction listers      !!

Now bid 'em up!!!!

Sorry for the delay in announcing the Shrew Hawk donors drawing.  It has taken me longer to get over being on vacation than I anticipated

Congrats, Tim!  I will be sending you a PM to make delivery arrangements.

Thanks to all of the St. Jude's listers who participated in this years event        :notworthy:    !!
