2216 out of 46# bow

While at a trad shoot this weekend I shot a guys full length 2216 Aluminum legacy shaft with 100 grains up front out of my RER that is 43 at 28".  I draw 29.  Surprisingly the arrow flew great.  I shot it at 15 targets and it flew great each time.  Am I missing something.  This arrow should have been way stiff.

I shoot them from RER Arroyo with 125 gr up front. I think it's got to do with how close it is cut past center. I also shoot 2117 with 200 gr up front......they hit like sludge hammers.

I'm guessing if you took the feathers off it wouldn't look so good. I've had a lot of arrows look beautiful until the feathers came off.

But if they fly good with them on why you even bother to bare shaft them......good is good. No wobble side to side or up and down....hitting the target square, should be good to go!

And if he ever took a shot in the rain guess what happens to the fletching... Also not making a good release will really show the effects of a non bareshafted arrow, that's why you bareshaft.

Why would you want to do that?  I don't hunt with bare shafts or shoot 3D with bare shafts.... they aren't very forgiving until you put feathers on them....Why take em off?

The spine on a 2216 is around a .376. That is really stiff for your bow weight,and the 100 gr up front sure is not making it any less.

  I think the combination of your center shot and the fact that the arrows were full length is the reason why they are flying well for you.

 You probably are just under 500 gr for the whole setup,which is putting you between 10 and 11 gpi.

Arrow weighted 552 grains (it is full length 31").  I was curious so I borrowed one to play around with. Put on a 100 grain VPA to see how the BH preformed and it flew very good.  I'm not saying that I am going to 2216 but I was going to switch to Easton FMJs this fall for my hunting arrow.  There great shafts but can be pricey. This test tells me I may have a better option.  Or at least a cheaper one than going with the FMJ.

Full length shaft and a 100 gr point are weighing in at around 472.

 I guess insert,nock,fletching,and possibly a wrap or crown dip could eat up the extra.  


 An FMJ is going to win in the penetration department though.

I am shooting a 31 inch 2216 with a standard alum insert and a 250gr broadhead. Total arrow weight 670gr out of a Bear takedown shooting 54# at 30 inches. Bareshafting is good, noise is still an issue as I think all recurves are more noisy but I have 4 dead birds this spring and hopefully a dead bear soon. I am normally not a gung-ho bareshaft guy as I think there are too many vaiables: wind, good release, luck. If I bareshaft then I shoot DOZENS of arrows with and without feathers and plot them so there is a trend.

They flew great out of my 47# Black Widow at 28"

I'm down in Calvert County.  I'll try to get ahold of one when I go to Denton Hill for the Trad. shoot.  Usually lots to try out up there.   would really like to find a nice setup with a 20XX shaft since I like a smaller diameter.

RER's are cut past center, they like an arrow that would seem to be too stiff. My XR is 47@28 (I draw 29'') and my 30 1/2" GT Trads (400), 175gr up front (tip and insert), are still a little weak bare shaft. I may end up in the 30 1/4" or 30" range.
