A day of bowfishing for stingrays
« on: June 08, 2014, 12:11:00 PM »
Spent last friday on the water after southern and cownose rays. It was a perfect weather day.
Met up with Capt. Marc around 10:30 and set off for an afternoon of bowfishing. It started out a little slow, but soon started to see some southerns I've bowfished for cownose before but never even seen a southern ray. They are tough and much stronger than the cownose. After a couple misses and a hit,but having the arrow pulled out, I got this one in the boat.

They put up a real fight. After a while got a shot at another one. He didn't fit in the barrel.

Later in the day we started to get into cownose so the shooting was fast and furious.

Sorry for the bloody pictures. By the end of the day we ended up with 4 southern and 7 cownose rays. Also 1 broken arrow, ripped my rest off, and a reel that's going to need some work done to it. They are tough on equipment. I have another 2 day trip in two weeks for just cownose so have time to fix things.

Lots of fun there.  I'd like to try it someday.  Growing up we use to do it with a large frog gig on a long pole in shallow clear water from the bow of a small skiff.  Just put it in idle and look for em.  Wings taste great.

Congrats on some great shooting. I toss the reel when shooting rays. And use a chlorine gallon jug with about 20' of line tied to the arrow. You can shoot more then 1 if you have the chance and then round them up

I used Capt. Danny Allen from Cedar Key Outfitters (FL) last year and plan to again this year.
