Well finally got caught up on some stuff. Yeah I was pretty stiff this morning.
After getting Brian's taken care of, (Great stalk by the way!) I spent most of the day running errands and working on the addition. Wanted to get out in my stand eariler for a change. This stand was near a Moose rutting area covering both the edge of an Alfalfa field and an old tractor trail thru the bush. I had set up a ladder stand between two old poplars coming out of the same trunk. About a 20 yd. shot to the lane and maybe 15 yds. to the edge of the field. I was sitting in the stand for a few mins. cooling down after the walk in when I heard something moving around behind me. After about 10 mins. I could see some saplings moving and focused my binocs on the area. I eventually made out the dark shape of a moose. Then saw that it was a Bull. I had hoped to hold out for a good one this year. But I am way behind on building a House and hunting isn't helping much. So decided if given the opportunity I would try to put some meat in the freezer, then hold out for a good Whitetail or two later. Well after taking his sweet time ( 1/2 hour ) feeding slowly along the lane he finally came thru an opening. Instead of feeding thru however he passed before I could draw. I held on the next one but before he stepped into it he stopped to relieve himself. When he finally headed out towards the field I was ready. My shot was a bit lower than I hoped for but I knew it was in the chest cavity. He ran out into the field and I don't remember climbing down the stand so fast. I hoped to see if he crossed and made it into the bush on the opposite side, but when I looked out he was walking slowly and soon started staggering. He stopped for a moment staggered back a few steps and fell over. It was pretty cool!!
Made for fairly easy recovery and getting 'em out. I hunt Moose alot like Whitetails and often see both from a stand. It's mostly farm country around where we live.
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

For those with a moose down here is an excelent way to do the front shoulder.
Corned Moose or Beef

This is an old recepie so you can forget about the oak barrel and use plastic.
Use Fresh killed Moose or Beef cut in roast size pieces.
BRINE
1½ pounds fine salt
½ pound brown sugar
½ ounce saltpeter

Scrub a good oak barrel thoroughly.
Put as much fresh killed beef as desired in barrel and cover with cold water.
Have water two inches above meat.
Let stand 48 hours.
Drain off water and measure before throwing away.
Measure same amount of cold water (spring water if possible) and to every gallon of water formally used, add above amounts of salt, sugar and saltpeter in the Brine receipe.
Boil BRINE ONLY 15 minutes and skim.
When cold pour over moose meat or beef.
Place heavy weight on meat to keep submerged under brine. It will float!
Store in cool cellar.
Moose/Beef is ready after 19 days.

Corned Moose Dinner :

Simmer a piece of corned moose for about an hour and change half of the water to remove salt..It will be salty!! now add carots potatoes turnip and simmer till the vegies are done, then add cabage quarters to the top and cover to steam till done.

This recepie works very well with moose shoulders or beef brisket or shoulder cuts. I usualy corn 1 shoulder of my moose. It freezes well to. DO NOT USE DEER MEAT!!!!!!!.It does not turn out at all with deer meat..
I have not tried it with Elk so I don't know about that one.
 Enjoy
 Pete

Curt-
Same riser with some lighter limbs. Feeling some arthritis in my shoulders these days. Glad Brian came to help with the butcherin.
They are fun to hunt. And the best part - a BIG target.   :D
