Anyone ever seen anything like this before?

This is from a squirrel I shot last Sunday. Since it's early squirrel season,thought you guys might be interested.....

 

 

 

 

 

 


It started out as small black spotinside a big bump under it's skin,then I noticed it was moving. Took about ten minutes for it to get out after it's host(the squirrel) was dead.

yeah
 I believe that is what they call a botfly larvae or warble.It develops into the fly iside the host's skin then comes out as a fly.

I think it is probably what I have always heard called wolves.  It is a parasite that is carried on rabbits during warm weather.  I hear that it is ok to eat the meat.

I have heard of them my entire life but have never seen one.  That is my guess.

Sure, they are in squirrels untill the weather gets cold.They come out around the first frost.They get in rabbits as well.That is why we usually don't squirrel hunt much untill the weather cools down.They are a larva from some type of fly.Pretty normal around here.

It's got to be a big fly....it's about 3/4" long and 1/2" wide......Thanx guys....looked like something out of a movie....

gjw77 is correct.Although I have never killed a sq. with one or any killed at my camp and I am talking hundreds ,very common in the South.They seem to occur more in some areas than others.All reports I have read is it does not harm the meat used only as a host for hatching.I would have a problem eating it though after cleaning.Kip

Yeah that's what we call wolves down here as wellsome type of fly larva.They are in rabbits too like stated above.

It's a Horse Fly Larvae..  I just had one removed from my dawg. The vet said he had removed six so far that week [Tues].  Seems the horse fly bites to make a hole into the skin and deposits the egg by the hole.  The egg finds its way to the hole and goes in.. The vet said that the egg is very sticky so it  won't wash off etc..

It definitely looks likes the Botfly Larvae. It is in the family of hairy flies which use mammals for the host until it emerges. As stated previously, very common in horses. There are some crazy videos on U Tube of these being removed from humans.

Watched a squirrell from my stand the other day that had at least 3-4 on it's back.We've always called them "wools" around here,and don't usually start hunting tree rats until a few good frosts,seems to get rid of them.

I agree with varmint, with the weather so hot down here in SC, I usually wait until after deer season and then take off after 'em. My grandpa would say the meat was ok, I have just never been able to deal with eating something that I have just watched some other organism that large crawl off/out of.  So I just wait for cold weather.

That's a pretty common site here this time of year,I'd say at least 50% of what you shoot will have them.I hear it doesn't affect the meat but it's not very appetizing seeing something like like on a critter you plan on having for dinner...

I have had the same larva fall out of a deer's nose after they are dead and start cooling off.
