AXIS FMJ 400 to stiff

I have a dozen axis FMJ 400 29" to BOP with  75 gr. inserts and 125 points I have been trying to get then to shoot out of my Northern Mist 60#@27" LB and they are coming up to stiff. I guess I wasted the money on the big $ shafts. Any ideas on what might get them to fly?  Or just try and sell them.

Yeah.  I'd say they are way stiff.

.500's should be close with that set up.

Definitely go up in point weight.  I'd start with 200 gr. tips.  Go from there.

Did you buy them that length ?? You might try more weight up front before you give them the heave ho .... I have 5 Zwickey No Mercy RW single bevels that weigh about 236 grns, you can have them for free just PM me your address. If they do not work out just pass them forward is all I ask.

Were they already cut to that length? I prefer to start full length and trim and tune from there.I shoot a Beman MFX Classic 400 from my 61#@27 Green Mountain Classic longbow.Mine ended up a hair over 30" with a 100 gr. insert and 125 gr. point.I find with longbows cut off center tend to like alittle longer shaft.Hard to say if you can tune them if the length is already set.I bought some used carbon 400 spine at 29 inches and were showing stiff.So I thought I could add more weight to weaken the spine.But they got worse the more weight I added.They were in effect bouncing off the riser instead of flexing around it.They probably would have tuned on a recurve cut past center.But on a longbow cut off center I find length more critical then how much weight you have upfront.Now with my carbon tuning I start full length and trim and tune from there.I let my tuning determine the final length of my carbon arrows.You never know until you try.Try using a heavier point weight?

No there were cut to 29" so I could shoot them out of a 55# recuve.

I would definitely try them in your recurve.May just fly perfect.My recurves seem to handle a wider variety of arrows then my longbows.

I have a pair of Centuar limbs in 55# coming for my Titan II maybe they will work with that set up.

I am shooting 400 FMJ out of my 53# recurve @27 and they fly great but I have alot more weight up front 375 grains. I treid to use the 500 but they were too weak for my set up.

I know majority of people will say that you are way too stiff. I will have to politely disagree.  I shoot a longbow that i build a few years back.  it is #51@28 and I shoot .400 spined arrows from it all day.  They are cut to 31 with 100 grain brass insert and 175 grain tip.  

My advice would be to add some weight up front(brass insert and about a 175 grain head).

Considering that inserts are roughly 1" in length and you're arrows are 2" longer than the ones in question plus the fact that they are 25 gr heavier. I would believe you will work just fine.
I have 400 FMJ 275 up front ~30" and they are too stiff.. Out of my 51# recurve

It all depends on how your bow is center cut. 400 spine will work great out of most recurves but longbows (many tending not to be cut to center) need 500's.

Comparing longbows, recurves, and even brands means nothing. I too like 400's for my recurves and most longbows I shoot like the 500's better.

I think either 150g points OR a 100g insert instead of 75g should put you right on the money plus/minus some brace height adjustment.  You're really close IMHO.  You could use some more point weight anyway, you're only at about 8.5-9gpp with that setup anyway.

They wouldn't be too stiff for me and I shoot mid to low 50#.  Front load them to reduce the dynamic spine if you think they are too stiff (I don't think they are though).  

There are many other tuning tricks you can use to arrive a good flying arrow...have you exhausted your options?

I probably did not use all the tuning tricks. I only no a few. Point weight, arrow length and brace height.

You can also change your side plate material to change the spine. I had a leather rest on my Wolfer and axis 400 were nock right.  Martin rest material were really nock left. Velcro were a little nock left. I am changing strings so I have not settled on an arrow.

Yes!  And the less strands also.

Axis FMJ only have the aluminum HIT insert or a 50/75 gr. brass insert.

With a B50 string my 55 pound Kodiak tuned fine with 340 spine...I decided to try a ten strand Whisper string I have and it shows a bit weak with 300 spine...I will eventually come up with a string that will tune with 300 spine
