B-55 string material
«
on:
July 02, 2014, 11:21:00 AM »
While at the Howard Hill shoot in Alabama I bought some B-55 string material and thought I would give it a try. I have always used B-50 and thought the new material would last longer. I made a Flemish twist string and was surprised that it stretched so much that I thought I must have done something wrong in making the string. Today I made an endless string on the jig I have always used with B-50 and put the string on the bow and it started with a brace height of around 7" and slowly stretched until there was no brace height at all. Has anyone else had this problem? Did I just get some bad string material?

Not at all! My hill likes B-55 over anyother string material and it usually moves about 1/2 while I'm shooting the string in. You had to have got a bad batch. If it is BCY I'm sure they'll send you another spool.
Great looking Boykin by the way.

B-55 has always stretched less than B-50 for me. Not much less......but less.

I guess I just got a couple of bad spools then. It's kind of comical to have a normal brace height and in a few seconds it be down to nothing. The spools were pretty cheap so I'll just use them to sew with or something.

Just a note to everyone--if you ever have any kind of problem with a BCY material or serving, give them a call, shoot them an e-mail (both are on the label) or contact me and one of us will make it right ASAP.
They don't claim to be perfect, but they will take care of a problem when there is one. Customer service second to none.

I'm going to send the string material to Chad to see if he has the same results as I have. It certainly could be something I'm doing wrong and not the B-55. Without a doubt, Chad is a great person to deal with.

Just a thought. While you are sending the spools of B-55, you might also include one of the strings in question. IF it is in construction, maybe he could give you some insight.

B55 works great for me. It is a lot like B50 but seems like its a bit stronger and lasts longer for me...

I use B55 on all of my non ff bows and never a problem, I get my strings from lefties R US and they settle in real quick without much streach and they stay put after initial shoot in.

Gordon, you are not alone. I have made up over 100 B50 strings with good results. A friend picked me up some B55 at Comptons.
My first string stretched 3-1/2" of brace height before I could even serve it.
I don't know how much more it would stretch, but I am more than a little disappointed.
It's the garbage can for this material.

Same experience. Stretched way more than B50 initially but then settled in and stayed there. Don't know what the problem was. Tried 3 different spools and they all did exactly the same thing.

I've only used it once.
The string was made by Josh.
It had to settle in a bit ...nothing out of the ordinary in stretch.
After it settled it seems to have locked in very well.
I'm very happy with the results.

I have it on two bows. Initial stretch, shoot in and no problems since. Probably lost an inch of brace to start. Really like it. Came from Leftiesrus. Allen makes a nice string.

Just an update: Chad sent me a refund on the two spools of B-55 string material I bought from him. He also sent me two new spools of B-55 to try. All along, I have wondered if the problem I had was the string material or something I did wrong. Regardless, Chad at Champion Custom Bowstrings went way beyond what was necessary to make a customer happy.

I apologize for taking so long on the replacement spools. I didn't have any on hand, had the ETAR coming up, and while I was there my mom passed away suddenly. I almost forgot to send them in the middle of everything.
Let me know how the new spools work out. I get a good bit of initial stretch/creep with B-55, but it settles in and isn't too bad.
