How to make FF safe tips?
« on: September 23, 2007, 10:17:00 PM »
Just got a reflex/deflex bow off of the form and am interested in making it fast flight compatible.  What does that entail?  Will wood overlays work or does it need to be phelonic or micarta?  How thick on the overlays?  Thanks,

Stan

A few years ago I bought a used bow off of the big yard sale and one of the tips was messed up - someone had tried to shoot fast flight but the tips were not reinforced. I bought some phenolic pieces from 3 Rivers and epoxied them into place.  I shaped them to fit the tips and that bow is good to go.  I have been using fast flight on it since and I have not had a problem.  The pieces I used were only about 1/8" thick. I think wood will work if it is built up enough but I am not sure about it, I could be wrong.

I shoot Fast Flight on selfbows with no reinforcing on the tips at all, just straight onto the bare timber. I alays build the string loops up with extra strands of dacron. Have never had a problem with fast flight.
Even on the fibreglass laminated bows I make I just use wooden tip overlays but I always build the loops up with dacron on all of my bows...Glenn...
