hey guys, i've been tuning my border recurve, 58#@28" i draw 26".
i've got 400 axis shooting real good with 525gr total upfront. 100gr insert and 425gr point.
i want to use a 500 spine so i can use 350gr upfront, 100gr insert and 250gr point or 50gr insert and 300gr point.
do you reckon this will tune alright? this will give me around 650gr arrow that is 30" long. rather that the really heavy 400 spine i have flying good now.

Clint Stus calc said the 500 will need to be 32 long to be the same spine as the 400 i would start full length with 500 then bare shalf and see what happens ..
Glad you have it sorted
Thanks Shane

i thought it was stiff to start off with but everything says its way too weak. proof is in the pudding though, when i piled on the weight on the front of the 400 it flew awesome.

So, you're drawing about 53# at your 26 inch draw? The 500s just might work cut down to about an inch longer than your draw, i.e., about 27 inches. Might not be able to put that much weight up front, but should get close.
Ozzyshane: I think you're misreading the calculator. .500 shafts are weaker than .400s, and the longer the shaft, the weaker its dynamic spine expression.

orion if you use the calc it said the 400 @30 525 was 16.5 and the 500 @32 350 was 16.7..that just with the calc not real life just com both shafts done with the calc
Clint i think you confused a lot of people when you draw length you said your draw 26 AMO which if im correct is 26+1.75=27.75
I think the soft velcro was the main thing and not being at centre shot .Thanks Shane

Orion,
I have a 26" draw, my centaur is 50# at my draw and I shoot 26.75" axis 500 with 345grain up front, great flight, it should be close for you.

Ozzy: I understand where you're coming from now. You had already plugged in the different point weights. I thought you were just comparing .500s to .400s, all other things being equal.
Ozy: Given Aldo's experience, they just may work for you, if your draw is 26 inches.

i'm going to give the 500's a try with 350gr upfront. if they are still weak at my minimum length ot 27.5" then i can try making the footing longer which should stiffen it.

If your real close you can add a little weight to the nock end of your arrow to stiffen it a bit.

I have gotten great flight out of a 58#@ 28 whip drawing 28.5 with the 500's and 300gr up front but got them cut to 29 so I thing you should be able to get them dialed in no problem. Easton's chart is real stiff in my opinion. I even get good flight with the 500's out of my 65# whip but have to lighten the front to 265gr.

There's no way to know before tuning but I think there is a good chance you can make it work.Being able to cut length is an advantage. There is supposed to be a 20# spine difference in the two shafts and that could = app. 100 grs of point weight.Cutting could probably get you the rest of the way.

ok, so i tried some 500's at full length. they shoot awesome with 125gr points and 100gr inserts (225gr upfront) with 2.5" 2020 footing. i want to shoot 350gr upfront. (250gr point and 100gr insert or 300gr point a 50gr insert depending on which head i want to hunt with)
how much would you expect i'd have to trim to bring them into tune with the extra 125gr upfront?

I have been trying to get 500's to fly and I am shooting 53# @27. I had to go to the 400's and I have 375 up front. I think you will have to use the 400's with that much weight up front.

I have had the same experience as Larry. My 400's with 300 out front shoot like lazers from my 53@28 recurve.

Ozy,a very rough, rule of thumb would be 25 grs=1" nut I've had some as low as 15-18 grs+ 1" and in higher FOC arrows,it could be much more than 25 grs.I think it's tough to know until you actually cut and tune.I would just go slow on the cutting.Cutting one inch and tuning that may give you a bit of reference but each successive inch could require more per inch.
I guess they are 31"?It sounds like you have plenty to play with.I think you are going to get it done.If I were to guess how much to cut I'd probably be wrong but I'm really interested to see what you come up with.

Ozy if you get them cut as far as you can go and are not quite at the point weight you want, you can add a little weight to the nock end and that will stiffen things, allowing you to add more point weight.1 gr on the back end will often equal 3 grs or more on the front, depending on where your balance point is.

larry and jake- 400's are too stiff. even at 27.5" with 350gr upfront. had put 525gr upfront on a 30" arrow to get good flight.
i'll trim the 500 in 1/4" increments and see how i go.

Just for reference cause I know you want more front weight. I shoot the Beman Centershots which is close to the 9/32 Axis arrows. I shoot a .500 cut to 29" BOP. 175 grain field point with 50 grain brass insert. The finished arrow weight is right on 500 grains. They group and fly straight at any distance with no feathers out of Leon Stewart longbows. I'm thinking your arrow would have to be full length to work with a .500 spine Axis and your desired point weight.
