What does your wife shoot?
« on: July 07, 2014, 10:12:00 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm looking to get my wife a bow for her birthday (her request) and the leading candidate so far is a Sarrels Foothills.  She will only be shooting 3D, and draws about 26".  She doesn't like the typical recurve grip, and prefers the longbow.  Any suggestions?

Wild Horse Creek. Kestrel in a longbow or Mariah in a recurve.

Sarrels have a 100% rep.  Good choice.  You might also consider a Toelke.  Dan makes a stripped down version of the Whip that you can ask for that costs less if you don't want a full blown fancy Whip.  There are many great choices out there.  I keyed in on Toelke because of the A-1 quality and ridiculous short build times.  My wife isn't fully enmeshed in the sport yet so she makes due with a 58" 26@26 OMP 3pc recurve.

Any of the Lost Creek models are hard to beat for performance and value.
Take care,

My wife shoots a Ragim Matrix, but she's just starting.  I'll just have to echo these guys on recommendations, we're all recurve here.

My wife really likes her Toelke classic longbow. She "outgrew" her first ( draw length lengthened and she's drawing more weight ), just bought her second, same model. These aren't on Dan's website these days, they're basically stock versions of the Whip; first was a "KDY" and the newer is an "RDY". I've shot both, and they are every bit as sweet, at least, as my Selway Lil Mag was, and my Javaman Falcon is.
That said, I like a little deeper locator grip and more palm swell, and love shooting my Falcon. If she likes that grip style, an appropriate size in an Elkheart or Falcon would be a super sweet bow.
Just my (limited) experience.

Nineworlds, you just described what I just described after you about the Toelke's. Wasn't  even up yet when I started typing!

BDann, I'll send a PM about that KDY bow.

Julie absolutely loves her kanati's  she's been through the gamut of bows and the nice small riser/handle design seems to fit just right. They are quite the performer too. They sure do launch an arrow

My wife has been shooting the same bow since 2001 (unlike her husband) It is a Legend Bow Co. and is a recurve. Jim Johnson was the Boywer and he is out of Missouri. I do not believe he builds bows anymore. Lori's is beautiful and the numbers are 28#@25" 60"

The cast is surprising and she shoots it very well.........

X2........but she started with a recurve back in the late 70s and now she wants to try a longbow so this winter I'm going to build her one.   :)

My go to bow is a dwyer dauntless, so that's what I got for my wife to shoot.  It's 30@28, so about 24 @ her draw.
I let dave pick the woods and he slimmed down the grip for smaller hands.

My wife has shot her last couple of deer with a Lost Creek NAT.  At 38# at her draw, it shoots 430 grain cedars straight through deer.

Currently she shoots a Arvin Weaver D/R osage "selfbow" 30# @ 28" (about 25# @ her DL)that I lucked into an amazing deal on. That being said, been thinking about picking her up something a bit more "modern". The Mad Dog Prairie Predator is at the top of a short list I've been looking at. Appears to be a lot of bow for the money and I've never heard anything but positives on here about his bows.

My wife shoots a 1955 Kodiak Special.  35 at 28.  She wont let me get her anything else.  She says, I like my bow why would I want another???   :dunno:

All I can say is, she and I are not cut from the same cloth.
Relax,
