Water Buffalo Horns

I believe there was a thread some time ago where someone showed how to make horn strips flat using dry heat and clamping. Does anyone remember this? Thank you.  Bue--.

I forget if it was a thread or in a magazine article or the TBB.

And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

Bue

I used John's instructions from the link listed above to straighten water buffalo for my 58" bow belley. Here is the link to page 3 with some pictures.

Also, I found that horn has to be VERY hot to change its form. Hotter than wood to bend, just short of the scorching point. You can see some brown discoloration - scorching - on the piece I was working. The brown was only on the surface and polished off.

I have changed the shape of pieces of horn a lot by boiling them in water, so 212F is enough heat, but they don't hae to cool very much for them to become nonplyable again.
