North Mississippi Hunting
«

Guys, just received permission to hunt some land south of Woodland, Mississippi off hwy 15 and was wondering what the hunting is like there. If the trail cameras and meat pole pictures don't lie, I may have to take the 6 hour drive during the rut. BTW, when would the rut be?
My new BIL is not a hunter and knows nothing about the hunting there.

This is a link to the MS rut map. I've found it to be pretty accurate in areas I've hunted. The link may be different on a PC, I pulled it up on my iphone.

It's a predominantly rural area with quite a bit of agriculture. There are good deer numbers and you should have no problem finding them. Deer quality is going to depend on how the surrounding properties are managed. For sure some great trophy bucks are taken from that region each year. For that reason as well as others there can be plenty of pressure too ... but that shouldn't be a big issue during bow season. They should be fairly easy to pattern until the guns start going off. My guess is you'll be pleased with what you find so long as the property has adequate browse & cover.

From what I gather, they have several hundred acres of woods and 100 or so in crops. BIL doesn't even hunt. His BIL kills two a year with bow "for good he says". The pictures I saw from last year was a 130ish and a 145" or better. Hard to tell on phone pics. Both were solid 3-1/2 yo or better. I'm pumped

rut will be longer too as there are so many does in most places. Ive seen chasing as early as late october and as late as March in central MS. I actually saw a spike chase a fawn on the side of I-20 in March or April this last spring. Peak would be Dec 1 to Christmas I'd guess though up that way. Our peak is usually around Dec 10-Jan 5 in west central MS
