New string for Hill bow.
« on: August 10, 2014, 08:22:00 PM »
I am about to order a new string for my Hill Big Five, but I have some questions.   I have never messed with different string materials before and have shot Fast Flight on my other bows.  I'm kinda new to shooting Hill bows and was hoping to get some insight from some of the veteran Hill guys.  So what string material is best for my bow?  I'm shooting a Hill Big Five.  It is 50@28 and I'm shooting 600 grain Douglas Fir shafts.  Thanks for any help in advance.

I shoot a low stretch string material on all my Hill's.I shot D97,8190 and Ultra Cam on them.It reduces any felt handshock and I find it much better on a Hill. Most Hill's built by Craig Ekin have a fiberglass wedge in the tips for a FF type string even if they don't have tip overlays.I have had Hill's with and without tip overlays and shot a low stretch string on all of them.

An SBD string makes a night and day improvement on all my Hill bows.

Am shooting an 18 strand BCY X string padded to 24 in the loops on my Hill style bows.  No silencers needed on any of them.  This is also the most stable bowstring material I've used yet.  Good luck with whatever you shoot.

Toby, I have always used a heavy (18 strand) b-50 string on my Hill style bows and I'm used to the way it performs and just haven't had any reason to change but if you're happy with the Fast Flight, why not keep using it.  The Fast Flight material will last much longer will be fine on your bow.

I've always used 16 strand B50 available from HH Archery with good success.

In my experience any type of FF material whether D10, D97, Ultracam, Rhino etc will reduce hand bump/shock on Hills vs B50, quiet them down 'even' more and keep brace height stable.  Try an 8-10 strand Ultracam string on that Big5 and smile.  A 12 strand Rhino will do it too.  Or an 8-10 strand SBD D10 or BCY-X.  Every Hill I ever switched to a skinny FF string was a transformed bow.

20 strands of BCY-X.  Best material I've used, on ANY bow.  Quiet, stable, durable, and will reduce the shock on a bow that has any.

14-strands of Dacron. Skinny strings work, yup. Fat FF strings work, yup. Dacron is still lower in tone and pitch. Ever hear a Partridge drum his wings???   Could you pin point his local???  not easy...

So there you have it. Input from one end of the spectrum almost to the other. Everyone has their own preferences in strings. Bottom line is what ever pleases you. So try them all and then decide for yourself. Your Hill Big 5 bow will handle it.
