Which tripod?
«

Going on a DIY elk hunt in around a month, and was wondering which lightweight tripod some of you folks thought would be a good choice for backpacking in to use with a spotting scope. Thanks in advance.

I use the Slik Sprint Pro and am really happy with it. You could also get the Slik Sprint Mini and save a little more weight, it just doesn't extend up quite as high although it's plenty high for glassing sitting down.
Here's a pic of mine with a 62mm spotting scope on it. It handles the weight of this scope and is plenty steady. I've added a small hook to the bottom to hang a weight bag (bag of rocks) from to steady if further although I've never found it necessary.

I will concur with Aaron (DT) I've used the Slik Sprint Mini for over a decade with a 62mm angled eyepiece Zeiss spotter and a multitude of 10x42 to 15x56 binoculars and have no complaint. I have a big Manfretto tripod if I am not packing in and want to stand and class. I prefer a chair or pad though.

Thanks for the input, guys. I saw that the leupold has been discontinued and is difficult to find. Everywhere that I can see, the Slik Sprint Mini has gotten great reviews for toughness as adjustability. Definitely leaning that way now.

Well, I ordered the Slik Spring Pro Mini II today, and will have it in time for elk season. It will be my first time using a spotting scope. Thanks for the input.

Pat,
A good pan head is just as important as the tripod. There are adapters to allow you to mount your binoculars to the tripod/pan head. You will be amazed at how much more game you spot when systematically glassing from the tripod. I use a Jim White setup but there are many options as you can see from Aaron's pic.

Good to know. My hunting partner texted me today to let me know that he has a good one and will be brining it along for the hunt. Getting more excited everyday.
