problems with shoot thru mesh, maybe hellical?
« on: August 18, 2014, 03:55:00 PM »
got a shot at a buck antelope today.  anyway, my blind has that shoot thru mesh stuff. ive never given it much thought, as my old arrows hit like normal through it. they were carbons with feathers that were just slightly offset.

today, my shot was with new woodies with a pretty aggressive helical.  now, ive shot these arrows a good bit and they fly great!  broadheads shoot like a dream. except for today.  the arrow had HORRIBLE flight.  looked like it was going half sideways.  of course it fell and I shot low of the buck, but im now kind of questioning my setup here.

anyone else had these problems?
is it September yet??

You don't say what kind of head you are shooting but I missed a nice buck shooting through mesh like that--arrow wobbled like a wounded duck and went up and  over his back.  I had shot a 2 blade head and noted the narrow tight little slit my fletch had to pass through--two days later had a shot at the same distance and used a 3 blade head and got perfect flight and a very dead antelope.  I had reasoned that maybe the 2 blade head cutting just a slit caused the fletching to have to squeeze through and maybe deflect the arrow as it recovered.  The 3 blade head cut a nice open hole through which the feathers passed easily.  Don't know if that was the cause or not but the 3 blade definitely cut a nicer clearing for the feathers. The buck I missed was bigger!

I've never trusted it.  I drop the mesh.

Did you take a few practice shots through the mesh????????.........or a few shots after that one to verify that it is a mesh problem?????? Id want more data than just one shot under pressure to narrow down the problem...........

Lots and lots of shots through the mesh over the years at turkey and deer. carbon, wood, 2 blade, 3 blade, 4 blade, helical and strait. No problems for us I never drop the netting and that's out of several different kinds of blinds.

I have a video of Guru shooting turkeys and deer with helical carbons and Woodsmans  through the netting of a double bull blind with a string tracker attached and no arrow wobble. We slowed it down frame for frame to check. Pretty cool video!

I always practice with my gear before I hunt too, like said might try a few more arrows before you blame the netting. IMHO

I have shot a ton of critters thru mesh, even using a string tracker. The only time I found shooting thru the mesh to be a problem is if your shot is at a real hard angle to the mesh. In that case I have found that the fletching will catch on the netting. It will also cut a nasty slash in the netting instead of a perfect broadhead shaped hole.

I would not shoot a 2 blade thru netting. I also make sure the fletching is very smooth coming off the shaft. I know if the quill is not smooth it will likely catch on the netting.

That is one of the reasons I prefer a brush blind.

i have to admit I was kind of lacking on the practice part... kinda. ive shot plenty thru mesh without a problem, but I had my blinds out already when these woodies came in and I was dying to hunt with em.  they seemed to fly perfect here at my target and broadheads were the same, so I figured Id see the same out of a blind.  but, I haven't actually shot em thru mesh, and was kind of just asking what everyone else had experienced.

no worries, I got back out the carbon set-up that I know is ready to go and ill save the woodies for the rest of fall, and antelope after I get to shoot em some from the blind.

I practiced shooting though the netting with 2 blade broadheads on wood arrows and actually thought I shot better than without the netting although I don't see how that's possible.  Have taken a few turkeys without any problems.

Never had any problems with 2 blades on carbon or wood thru the mesh. That would be Zwickey's, Magnus and Ace if you curious.

Zwickeys and Switchblades thru mesh with no problem. Aluminum and helical fletch (left wing)
I would've taken better care of myself,if I'd known I was gonna live this long!

Never had a problem with the mesh.  I've even shot a squirrel with an Ace blunt through mesh.  Wood arrows, 5" shield, helical fletch.  Also shot a red fox at around 25 yds through the mesh.

Not trying to step on any toes, but more than likely it was user error.  A pluck or any other error might be modified going through mesh.

I've shot lots of woodies and carbons through mesh.  No problems, except when my bow tip caught a bit of the blind.  In short, it wasn't the arrow's fault.  It was mine.  Are you sure you didn't hit the blind with a bow tip?

3 blade VPA with 5" feathers have always done well out of my Double bull shooting thru the mesh. While I was skepticl at first shooting thru it but no have plenty of confdence doing so.     A couple of spots I hunt the deer come very very close at times to the front f the blind.  I need the mesh.

orion, I don't think I did but I don't know. it wasn't that I missed that got me.  if id just shot low id have thought nothing of it other than he was further than he looked.  this arrow just flew sooo bad.  but I am guessing it was something I did, just not sure what.

oh well, tomorrow I try again lol.

Good luck Brad and make sure to shoot a shot or two through that mesh to get the confidence up again.  Sure wish I was hunting with you.
