Double serving

someone teach me about double serving!!

I am wondering eactly how you tie the string off when you finish back where you started!

I serve as normal, tie off. Then reserve over top where needed...............

That's how I do my double servings.I first serve with one diameter and tie off.Then I'll serve with a larger diameter serving over top just enough for my nock points and fingers.I don't double serve the entire length.

so do you do the same process on the top serving?  Tie is off with the back wraps on top of the serving?

I make the top serving a little longer, maybe 1/2", on each side than the bottom serving, and just tie off on each end with a normal serving knot, the same as you would if there were only one serving.  This allows the top serving to cover the knots I made when I did the bottom serving, and makes it look a little cleaner.

I only double serve the top part of the string down to an inch or so below your fingers. Saves a little material and still seems to protect the string just fine at the bottom with only one layer. I've done it with 2 different diameter materials tying each one off separately and one continuous strand bottom to top and halfway back down.....both seem to work just fine.

I will have to figure out exactly how far down i need it double served for split and 3 under.  

So you guys who don't serve the whole serving, so you do the tie off on top of the serving?


I have been trying to double serve a string and everything i do it(i haven't tied off yet, just get to bottom and head back up), the base layer begins to slide.  I must not be getting the base layer tight enough.

Yep just tie off on the first layer of serving. Use quite a bit of tension on the serving tool (if you let go it should spin back a couple times) and serve the same direction as the twists in the string on the first layer with the string under tension as well if you can. These both help prevent slipping. Also, larger diameter serving and smaller diameter strings can give you problems. Since you are double serving I'm guessing that you are using .019 or smaller so if you get it as tight as you can....you should be ok.

I have .18, .21, and .25.  I have had all 3 of them slip. lol. They never slip until I get all the way back up to where i started(then i had to unwrap the whole serving and try it again(about 3 times to be exact).

When you start your serving, leave a tag end several inches long.  After 15-20 wraps, grap the tag with a hemostat or wrap it around a screwdriver--something to get a good hold--and pull it good and snug.  That should help.  Then serve it tight.

If you use two different sizes of serving, always put the smaller size on bottom.

Worst case scenario, you may have to hand-serve that last half-inch or so to keep from separating it.  Go a quarter-inch or so past when you tie off the top serving.

I used to double serve like most here do, but now use plumber's teflon thread tape as the first base layer.  This way I only have to use one size serving instead of two different sizes.  You have to experiment a little on how many wraps for the strand count and string material.

I don't think there is a "benefit" to double serving, but with new material getting stronger and far skinner than old b50 himself, you have to adjust your serving diameter for make the nocks fit right.

Pierre(SBD strings) makes a 6 strand out of d10. A really skinny string. If he didn't double serve(or at least pad the loop) no nock in America would work.

I had to double serve a string today. The serving on it has had roughly 3000 arrows shot from it. It isn't wore out it just got to the point where the nocks weren't hardly as in place as I like for them to click in.

I tried it with serving material but that was too thick. I ended up giving it a once over with dental floss just where my tab covers when shooting. It made the nocks fit perfect again. I don't expect it to last forever but it has extended the life of the string just a little.
