Author Topic: Sarrels knocked one out of the park with this new longbow!!!!!!  (Read 702 times)

Well, a while back I decided to get a new longbow. The last new bow I had bought was my Sarrels Blueridge longbow named "The Black Plague". That was in 2009! That bow and I have been on a lot of hunts together and had a lot of successes together, and I will never get rid of her!

So, as I was thinking about ordering a new bow, another Blueridge was really the only option for me. I got with Bob and told him what I was looking for in wood combinations and he started pulling rough wood out of his stash and showing it to me. Now, I am no woodworker, so I cannot tell from looking at the sawn wood what it will turn out look like after it is finished, so I just told Bob that I trusted him to get the look I was after.

I also told Bob that I wanted something unique on this bow and told him I had an idea. I have another bow that has impala horn tips and asked if he could do that. He told me he did not know where to get the horn, but that if I could find it, he could do it.

Now my quest was on! I started searching the internet for impala horn. It proved very hard to find. All I could find was bufalo horn that was carved to look like impala horn. This got me wondering if it was real impala horn on my other bow or not. In my search, I decided to send a PM to a very fine knifemaker on another site I frequent. This is a knifemaker who makes some absolutely stunning knives. Thank you again, Tim, for hooking me up! Anyway, he refered me to a website that he thought may have impala horn. As I was browsing the site, I found many other kinds of bone and horn to look at.

As soon as I opened the page with the kudu horn, I knew that was what I had to have on my new bow. I was not sure if it would work, or if Bob could make it work, but I ordered it anyway. It came in and I made a trip to Bobs shop to show it to him, along with my ideas for it. I wanted both the limb tips and the limb caps over the bolt holes to be in kudu horn. Bob said the tips should be no problem, but he would have to play with the horn to see if he could get it to work for the limb caps.

Well, several weeks later, Bob called me and said to come over to make sure the grip was right. The bow was still unfinished and I was blown away! He got the grip just right for me and then in just a few more days, called me to say my new bow was ready. To say I was blown away when it was still not finished was nothing. After the finish was on, this bow was exactly what I was hoping for. No, I think even better than I had hoped. This is by far the most beautiful bow I have ever owned! I was very worried about switching from The Black Plague, as we were more as one together than any other bow I have ever had. After shooting this new bow for just a few days, I can tell that we will have a great future together!

Here she is! Sarrels Blueridge (long riser) takedown longbow

Ziracote riser with red micarta accent stripe
Limbs are black walnut on the back and black glass on the belly

Thanks again Bob and Zach for doing such great work!

It was black till Bob started grinding on it! I think it turned out better the way it is, than if it had been black all the way through!
