Chasing Elk...Following my Son's SPOT (Text Added)
« on: August 30, 2014, 12:08:00 PM »
This is my son's second season chasing elk in the mountains around Crested Butte, CO.  My new knee and errr old age prevents me from going into the high country.  But I'm enjoying following him as he marks his journey with his SPOT locating devise.  With Google satellite mapping, I can see what mountains, drainages, and dark timber he is in.

Zach (Skihard on TG) and his buddy are young, good legs and live in that altitude.  Both are ski patrollers, mountain bikers, kayakers so high country hiking comes with ease.  They each have a pack with bevy gear and food so if they separate, they don't need to come back to a camp for the night.  They have been scouting this area for a couple of weeks and are already into a herd this morning.

It's all very exciting for me to watch their routes....tippit

Good luck to your son.  When I get to go out there, I hunt just a bit north of there, just NW of the pass at Red Rock (Granite ? ).  Can't recall the name of the pass.

I like it out there.   Was all set to go this year but I got a puppy this spring (wirehaired pointing griffon) that is in big need of attention, training and hunting time this fall.  He trumps my trip.

Hey Chuck,
I'm in a similar situation.  I was given a one year old Boykin spaniel that had already been trained for bird hunting.  With my knee replacement, I was unable to run him the past two months...but I'm looking forward to a little fall bird hunting now.  Good luck with your dog!

Thanks Jeff,  I need these elk updates.  Couldn't go this year for only the second time in 20 years - this time because of surgery also.  I am determined to be on the mountain again next year.

Those SPOT things are really cool, not to mention a great safety device for the back country.  Very cool that you can follow along on his adventures!

I'm at the cabin this weekend getting your stands and ground blinds ready.  :thumbsup

This is fun following Zach on satellite thru dark timber and into different drainages.  Got a Text from him last night when they made camp...

"Had a fun day really put B'day present First Lite ASAT camo to the test, got 15 yards from 3 cow elk & 2 calves, 10 yards from big black bear, and 5 yards from a mule deer doe I could have touched.  No big boys yet"

Very cool Doc.  I've been looking at the new SPOT and DeLorme.

That new knee is not going to hinder your Atlantic Salmon, is it?  I will start after the Kings later this week.

Jeff it's a hoot following them with the SPOT. Did that last year while my son was solo scouting. Nice to know he is safe.

Steve O,
Oct 5th will be my first real outing...Atlantic Salmon in New Brunswick  :)   I've been working out on my stationary bike and just started riding my mountain bike today.  I'm ready for some fun!  Then off to Whip's for Nov Whitetails and all winter chasing Redfish & Hogs.

Tom,
That SPOT is really cool.  It is nice to know exactly where they are if help is needed.  I felt like I was hunting along with Zach.  Are you living out there now?  Elk hunting this fall?

Charlie,
"SPOT Trace will acquire its exact coordinates from the GPS network. SPOT Trace sends the GPS location to communication satellites. The satellites relay the message to a ground network, which uses the internet to route the message to your phone or computer."  So you can let friends in on your account and they can watch you in real time on Google Satellite Maps.  Especially great for the solo hunter.

Jeff we have been out here, for about 4 months, renting and hope to close on a house in about 4 weeks. Luke and I are headed out mid week to chase them for a few days. Headed out to ND for a 10 day sharp tail hunt and then on to Minesota for three days of grouse and woodcock hunting......fish the rest of the fall.

That's neat, Jeff!  We haven't caught all the redfish just yet so take your time.  Benjy might kill all the hogs, though.    :knothead:
