THUNDERHEAD 125 BROADHEADS
« on: August 31, 2014, 09:46:00 AM »
Have any of you guys ever used thunderheads,  if so what kind of results did you get..I am shooting a 50# palmer this year kind of undecided whether to use a two blade or stick with the thunderheads, any advice will be appreciated......thanks

I have killed deer with them, but I was using a 60# Martin Mamba. For 50#, I would be inclined to use a cut on contact 3 blade, or 2 blade as long as they fly perfect.
If it's in your way, move it.

I have shot a ton of critters with T-Head 125's   from 50ish pound bows. Back then, I could not sharpen a butter knife, and my thinking was that it would be better to have a razor sharp chisel point, than a not so sharp 2 blade COC head. I finally figured out how to get my two blades sharp, and only use them now. I can say from personal experience that the COC 2 blades are better, but the T-Heads will work.

I used them about 20 yrs ago when I shot compound.  They're a great head, but for a 50# trad bow, I agree with buckracks7. I'd use a cut on impact 2 or 3 blade.

Just touch up their chisel point tips to needle point sharpness w/ a file and you'll be fine.

I used them successfully for many years hunting deer, bear and elk with my wheel bow.  For what they are I think they are a good broadhead.  That said I gave a bunch away recently because after transitioning back to traditional 5+ years ago I have gone to Grizzly single bevel broadheads.  The advantages for me are many not the least of which are the ability to add significant weight to the front of my arrow, IMO a tougher broadhead that I have tremendous confidence in.

My current setup is a 650 gr. arrow with 31.6% FOC - I could never have that level of FOC with Thunderheads

You've killed a lot of game w/ a BH using a bow that creates a heck of a lot more energy than the trad. bow you shoot today but you want a stronger BH for your trad. bow?????

I have killed many a critter with 125 grn TH's out of my trad bows including the whitetail in my avatar ... they always flew great and I never had a bad result from them. You can always keep them sharp with new blades without the hassle of sharpening them, I was very sharpening challenged.

I've killed a bunch of critters with them but it was with s compound, that said I would use them without any worries. If you shoot them right a Thunderhead will do fine. Now I don't think they will do what's coc will do but they will be fine if you do your part.

Overbo, yes you are correct.  Traditional isn't about kenetic energy pushing a broadhead through, it's about cutting your way through.  Though Thunderheads have served me well the blades aren't terribly durable as compared to the Grizzly nor have they produced the blood trails I was looking for.  Will they work?  Sure, but I wanted something I felt was better.  It's all about choices.

One of the best broadheads ever made.

If you're not into sharpening others, thunderheads or Muzzys are a no brainer. Those two have probably killed more than the rest combined.

Okay thanks guy's I appreciate all the info, I had at one time thought about using steelforce 2 blade broadheads. ...they seem to be a good broadhead they also make a single bevel that seems good.

If you want to tinker and try new broadheads that's fine, knock yourself out that is part of the fun.  But your Thunderheads and 50 pound bow are more than enough for Florida deer if that is your concern.

I would much rather see a guy in the woods with a wicked sharp Thunderhead than a good "trad" style head that is dull.  In fact to this day I recommend Stingers and Thunderheads to inquiring customers who find themselves sharpening challenged.

Long ago we had a pro shop here with a stack of tattered photo's on the counter top that had been dropped off by customers over the years.  One of those pictures was of a 12 year old girl with not one but two deer, a doe and a forkie buck.  She killed them both on the same hunt with a 27# bow and Thunderheads.  That was with a very old compound that was probably slower than most of todays stick bows and short draw to boot.  I've never forgotten that pic!

get yourself a KME and never look back. this makes it so there should be no reason a human being can't sharpen a trad head.

I have used thunderheads with great results. I even have a few 160 Thunderheads mounted up for this year. Sharp is the key with clean ethical close shots.

they where fine,,  also muzzy 3 blade 125's which where designed by a guy who shot a longbow are fine too!   if you can get magnus stingers they are a great deal and they are accurate,,,,, there are guys with compounds on Ytube shooting the 100 2-blades 100+ yards and hitting 3" balloons..

but not to side track the original poster that like everyone else says the Thunderheads will put deer in the freezer all day long.

I've killed a bunch of deer using a T-Head 125 out of 47-49 lb bows.

You should have no problem with Florida deer but hogs might be another story with the 125 grain Thunderhead. I would also strongly recommend a good cut on contact two blade or three blade head. Ditto the KME sharpener. Sharpening your own braodheads is a big part of the over-all traditional experience. Good luck, "Keep-Um Sharp" and shoot straight.   :wavey:
