Heading for the San Juans for an elk adventure
«

Leaving tomorrow for a 10-day elk hunt in Colorado’s San Juan Wilderness Area. Joe Blake and I are packing in on horses to a remote base camp above 10,000 ft. Excited about the upcoming adventure. Hopefully, will capture a cover photo for the Fall TradArchers’ World magazine that will go to print at the end of the month. Maybe, a story too. Good luck to all TGers heading out on adventures of their own… and be safe!

Good luck Tom. If you hear a sickly sounding elk bugling from the next ridge over...well, it just might be me!

Good luck Dale. Hope you and Gary have a great hunt. I remember your bugling from our trip to Idaho... you're right, it was sickly sounding bugle. LOL

I've been twice to the Hermosa Creek drainage of the San Juan Mts between 9K' and 10k'. Beautiful area but someone forgot to tell the elk we were there. Good luck. Looking forward to seeing your hero shot with your quarry.

Hope you have better luck than I did there. We went 4 years ago and we covered 63 miles in 9 days on foot and never saw an elk. Many old sign although once or twice we saw recent sign. Did see a bear or two though.

Went on my first Trad elk hunt in 1973 in the San Juans. Come to think of it everything was traditional back then. I moved up from my first bow, a 45lb. Kodiak Magnum to a 55lb. Gamemaster Jet for the elk. Great memories. Heading to North Central Colorado on the 19th. Can't wait.

I was there several years ago hunting Blackhawk south to Orphan Butte. We camped at 10600' . Even hunted the Hay Camp area. Had elk close a couple times but no shots. My buddy lives in Cortez and they hunt it every year. Been very slow for them these past couple years. I don't think he's going up that high this year.
