outing # 33 The Granddad NKA Roundabout

A name change in the middle of the season just to confuse things? But sitting in the stand this am, it reminds me so much of a round about I just had to do it.

The rain was replaced by wind. 20 MPR sustained and out of the N . I needed to be out of the wind so I went to one of 2 places where I knew for certain that would be the case.

The true wind is the top red arrow. How the wind behaves at the bottom of this bluff is the bottom red arrow.

The bluff behind me is very steep. The steepest on the farm . Almost straight up and it really plays havoc with the wind flow. The Wind almost always goes south to north here (uphill). The exception is with a very light and variable wind. Deer seem to move along the bottom edge of the timber or through the top of the old orchard.

Once again I set up the decoy. I had seen two bucks really going at it in the center of the food plot Monday night. It was hard to make them out in the rain but 2 small bucks were really shoving each other around.

The Aspens on the side of Rattle Snake ridge are at their peak color now.
Eventually this set up is going to lure in a buck , just didn't happen today .

outing #34 Haybale

The Hay bale has been seeing some action this year and with the the wind iffy all day that's where I headed.

At 4 pm that buck fawn from the last time I sat here was in the field grazing. He must be living in the creek bottom along side the corn. He fed and then headed up the hill.

The rest of the afternoon was spent watching various critters cross in front of the bale.  Pheasants, Squirrels, 4 raccoons and various song birds kept me entertained.

Then right at dark a big doe with 2 fawns slipped into the field. They kept their distance and legal light was gone. I slipped out of the blind but got caught standing along side it watching them feed.

Weather looks promising for the am!

Good luck Jim, looks like the weather broke and you will have a beautiful morning to be out. We had 3 inches, how is the new pond level?

Outing #35 Sure thing.

Chuck you are right on it was an absolutely gorgeous morning.

Last time I hunted here was on 10/7. I had decided then I wanted to try it in the am.

There was fog today but I was still able to get to the stand with out the use of any artificial light.

The changing light due to the fog was just outstanding.

I had done a little light rattling and there was some noise down below me. Picking up my bow at the sound, I scanned the trees below. I picked out a horizontal line where it shouldn't be. Focusing my attention there I caught sight of a tail flick.

A buck! But not quite what I am after. It was another buck fawn! He had tiny little hard antlers poking thru his scalp. He sure got me going for a second or two!

He fed on down the hill towards the hay bale.

After a few distant gun shots, it dawned on me the youth gun season opened today. So that combined with non hunting visiting family, I may not hunt much until Monday.

To answer Dan's question, we get 5 tags. one either sex and four doe tags.  Hoping to get up to the pond soon and to check out the level.

Look at this colors!  It's crazy to look at those colors and think about how the Lord created that for us to enjoy.  Beautiful is an understatement.

I saw the first chasing going on tonight!! A 10 point came down the hill and was chasing does in the beet field behind the house. Too bad I was in the kitchen watching out the window!

awsome pictures Jim!! Sure wish I could be out. Just Beautiful. Got to love it. Plus you got your heart pumping, thanks to the young buck. At least you know what the 10 point looks like now.
Morning hunt should be good with a new front moving in.
Good luck if you make it out.

outing #36. Lower coffee cup

While visiting family slept deeply in their beds I headed up the trail with every intention of decoying at the Justin  stand(19). But standing at the base of the tree the wind was just too strong. So I headed down hill to the LCC stand (17)

Once down in the bowl , I could hear the wind above me but was out of its path. I hoped deer wanting to bed out of the wind would be headed into the same cover.

This stand is on a very steep hillside.

A narrow funnel up the center of the bowl passes the ladder stand.

I did some light rattling sessions every 30 minutes or so. But nothing came to my calls. Hopefully we shall start to see some receptive bucks soon.

outing #37  return to Dallas' stand

Once again we had a strong SW wind . I headed up early with a 2 d Montana whitetail decoy strapped on the pack

I set the decoy up at about 35 yards hoping a buck will circle down wind and end up in front of me.  Buck sign is starting to appear on trees and on the ground.  But all I heard tonight was the blast of shotguns near and far. All I saw one was big skunk.

I am happy to report the first of our many gun seasons is over and I will have about 2 weeks before they are back out in force. It never ceases to amaze me the number of late hour gun shots you hear. Not only are they illegal but to show such disrespect for the deer and their fellow hunters. Unless the deer drops, there is no way for them to know if they hit or missed. Really tees me off.
