Anybody shoot "cock feather in"?
« on: September 09, 2014, 06:47:00 PM »
While most shoot with the cock feather facing away from the riser, I wonder if any here ever shoot cock feather "in".

Maybe at times or with certain bows?

Curious, Skychief.

I shoot with all of mine in. I didn't even know that was an option until I read it on here. I put the arrow on the string and then turn the nock until it looks the best. When you look at it from the back it looks like this way has the best clearance. I think if you have your arrows tuned good, the arrow is supposed to be flexing around the riser anyway,so it probably wouldn't be much different whichever way you did it.

I do. I read you get better clearance when right handed shooting right wing feathers and that seems to be the case.

Cock-feather in all the time. Although I believe, with most bows, if you're tuned properly it really makes no difference.

The arrows that are already made up with RW feathers and I'm shooting RH, I turn the cock feather in. The latest arrows I made, I use LW when shooting RH and I use RW when shooting my LH bow.

Cock feather in from all bows for the past 30 years or so-ever since reading about it in Jack Howard's Bowhunters catalog.

To really realize the benefits of cock feather one really needs to tweak your nocking point-it needs to be lowered and some can be lowered by a lot. Mine lowered by over 1/2".

I shoot cock feather in.I use a Jo-Jan and right wing. I have another fletching jig left wing, and I shoot that with cock feather out. It works for me.

I use the cock feather on the tip of my nose as one of three anchor points.  Therefore, I can't shoot cock feather in, otherwise I might try.  I should note that I shoot 3 under.

Right hand shooter...RW feather nocked normal, notice the position of the odd hen feather, down position.

Now with cock feather in..odd hen is in the "UP" position.

Same RH shooter using LW feathers, odd hen is automatically in "UP" position when nocked with cock feather OUT

I shoot my hunting arrows with cock feather in. When shooting target arrows it's usually out.

It does help with flight when shooting broadheads.

Yeah, I know, if my bow is tuned properly it shouldn't matter. Well I gave up all that tinkering for perfection when I quit shooting compounds 28 years ago.

They fly good with cock feather in. Done!

I fletch all 3 feathers the same color....especially shooting carbons with "tunable" nocks, what would be my cock feather is usually traveling through the chanel between sideplate and rest.

Due to archers paradox it really does not matter - traditionally as most have said on here the cock feather should point in towards the riser.

I know this is a late response, but found out something interesting---my arrows bareshafted well, but when I fletched and paper tuned they showed stiff---consistently.  I shoot a Toelke Whip 50@28 but draw 26 inches.  I am using full length beman mfx 600s and gold tip 1535s with 200 grs up front.  I was shooting an inverted Y fletching.  When I switched to cock feather in my arrows began showing bullet holes.  I shoot left handed and use rw feathers.  Guess maybe some bows or maybe some form/releases do better with cock feather in...  Anyone else have similar results paper tuning?
