I put in my application for Draw Elk at Greenwater Provincial Park back in May. I got the news that I was drawn in Aug. I have been hunting in this Park almost every 4 years for the past 20, except this year will be my 5th year application.
I knew exactly where I was heading, but it is a 8 kilometer walk in, partly on snow machine trails and partly through the bush. You can use a ATV to retrieve an animal that is down, but must walk when hunting.
I got drawn with my 82 year old Dad and Brother. my brother could not make first week due to family and my Dad although in great shape for his age is slowing down and will be rifle hunting. All weapons seasons co-inside at the same time of year, calling season.
We stayed at my cabin, just north of the Park a couple miles.
The first day my dad was delayed, so in I went to my favorite spot - the great wallow
Have you seen such a wallow?
The first day I called in 3 elk, all stayed out to 80 yards, never saw one of them through the almost impenetrable hazelnut that take up 95 % of the Park.
I put on over 38 km (walked in and out twice so I could pickup my Dad and walk in with him) this day, from 4:00 am to 8:30 pm, wow was I done for.
The next morning again at 4:00am we were on our way in.
I knew this was going to be a good day, Dad could not make it all the way so I set him up a little spot and kept going to the wallow.
Just after legal time I bugled and got a response from the west, then I had two Bulls chasing each other run through the area (about 70 yards out)full tilt not sure still if they were coming to my calling or just there. They sounded like freight trains through the bush for several minutes.
